A serial killer with traits of a werewolf has struck and Dr Scarpetta takes it on. She is still suffering from the loss of Benton and her niece, Lucy, is not in contact with her. There is a new police chief who puts Marino in uniform and wants to get rid of Scarpetta. Lots of stories and suspense. Pretty good read.

I own this book. Find this review on The StoryGraph.

Oh look, another novel I have but haven't read until now. I didn't realise my first read of 2024 was part of a series until I checked the facts. Initially, Black Notice looked promising until I examined the ratings and reviews, consequently lowering my expectations. When I finished it after I had to pick it up and read Black Notice, it was only okay. It starts with the first character I see, Kay Scarpetta, or Kay for short, who picked off after solving her last mystery when, only after a few pages, discovers evidence for a new investigation. Kay finds a body in a box at a port, and she initially finds it unclear why it is there, but the reasons reveal themselves soon enough. Black Notice's biggest flaw is its characters because I couldn't connect or relate to them, and it didn't help that they weren't enjoyable to read either, as they were irritating. The pacing didn't work either, as even though it clocked in at over 400 pages, it read like it was longer than that. However, removing the filler pages with nothing much happening would work in Black Notice's favour. It can't even function as a standalone, making it more unsatisfying, but unfortunately, no one I know has the previous instalments. Incredibly, this series is still ongoing. In the conclusion, Kay finds the murderer, colloquially known as 'The Werewolf,' finishing the narrative. ( )

Called to one of the most horrific crime scenes ever, Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Kay Scarpetta, tried to hold it together as she surveyed her surroundings. Not only was her personal life in total shambles, after losing the love of her life, Benton Wesley, but her professional life was wavering also. Although she didn't know it at the time, but her next case and the crime scene before her, would change everything, regarding herself, and others close to her. Entering a huge container, Kay found a badly decomposed body, and it will not only cause alarming questions with a diabolical aftermath, but where it leads will make it even more terrifying. While in the middle of the autopsy, Kay had discovered quite a few things, but first, she had to figure out who was trying to ruin her. She not only had a traitor in her midst and under her employ, but someone was impersonating her on the internet, but who? Who had it out for her? Who wanted her fired in the worst way? One of her employees? One of her peers? Her enemies? She hadn't a clue but she was determined to find out. After pointing her in the right direction, Kay was once again, joined by homicide detective Pete Marino, and as always, they went where the evidence led them, in this case, Paris, France. When more murders are committed, both in France and the States, Kay and Marino head back home to Virginia, but when death knocks on Kay's front door, she looks through the peephole and sees the eyes of pure evil and cold calculation. Will Marino get to her in time?. ( )
