Friends in the "Bonnie Bunch", among others, had been raving about Crossing To Safety and since I had read and loved Angle of Repose, it was time to dig it out of the tbr and give it a shot! Of course there are a multitude of novels out there that explore the complexities of friendship but I don't feel many probe as deep and perceptibly as Stegner does here. This story follows two couples over several decades, as they deal with ... Smiley & Molly- Sounds like a sitcom! Nice to hear all the Stegner talk! Of course, I just finished and loved Crossing To Safety. I also think Angle of Repose is a masterpiece, it's worthy of a re-read one of these days. I also wishlisted Beyond the Hundredth Meridian and The Spectator Bird, ... Smiley -- I love Crossing to Safety and I agree it would be a shame if it's all of Stegner that people read. I think Angle of Repose is a great book and I do admire Big Rock Candy Mountain. There are so many aspects to Stegner's work. I'm especially fond of a collection of his ... ... underline good bits. Can't say I see Crossing to Safety the same way. It is a good book but I think Angle of Repose and especially The Big Rock Candy Mountain which can be favorably compared with The Grap ... ... am reading more due to the fact that people keep giving me new authors and books that become must reads. I have now added Crossing to Safety to my list, thank you very much, it joins Lark and Termite -which is on the NYT 100 Notable Books- which was also added due to you.

I have read Stegner's Angle of Repose which I really liked, but not Crossing to Safety.l If you are giving it 4 1/2 stars, it must be something special. I will have to look for it.

I finished Joyce Carol Oates' Little Bird of Heaven and really liked it, a typical Oates' novel with tons of family troubles and mountains of angst, though I didn't think it quite so good as her 2008 book ... I finished Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner and it's another excellent novel by a master! I don't read much sci-fi but a friend passed Rendezvous With Rama by Arthur C. Clarke, on to me and it's been highly enjoyable. I also don't listen to audiobooks (this could change) but I ... ... I loved Broken for You. BTW - we still need to talk abt Await Your Reply!

I finished The Cellist of Sarajevo and cannot recommend it higher! Excellent read! I just started Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner and this looks to be another exceptional read! The hits keep coming!! ... qualify.

I haven't read Crossing to safety or Stoner, but they sound much more serious than the Lodge/Bradbury type novels. The Lodge novel that is most like them might be How far can you go?, ... ... hoping that my LT friends will help me find gems out there in this particular niche.
I would say two of my favorites are Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner and Stoner by John Williams. (touchstones not working)
David Lodge has often been recommended to me. I did read Small World.

Cutting for Stone was a 5 star read for me - loved it. I also love anything by Wallace Stegner. I read Crossing to Safety in the early 90's and loved it; might be time for a reread. ... & terrific reviews! I'm just going to follow along behind you and pick winner after winner. Next up: Cellist of Sarajevo, Crossing to Safety and Cutting For Stone. I am reading (slowly!) Crossing to Safety. I'm enjoying, but not loving it. And I'm in no rush to finish either. Then I've been reading some old mysteries around here too. I finished Cheerful Money: Me, My Family, and the Last Days of Wasp Splendor by Tad Friend and started Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. msf59: Crossing to Safety is one of those books I find myself reading aloud -- I don't plan to do it; it happens involuntarily, like breathing. And there's no one else here, so I'm not reading to anyone, except maybe all these other books.

I loved Crossing to Safety and almost anything else that Wallace Stegner wrote (especially Angle of Repose). Have you read any of his other books? Straight Man is my favorite Richard Russo book. It may be time for a re-read. I didn't start tracking my reads until 2001 so ... ... an annual reading list for over 20 years and a book journal since October 21, 1997. The first books I wrote about were Crossing to Safety and Straight Man, which I read during a Colorado blizzard. We were homebound for several days with no electricity. Ah, the good ol' days.

The Prince of Tides Pat conroy Glad you brought up Stegner again. Crossing to Safety is one of my all time favorite books - I reread it every few years. In the past few days I finished Wallace Stegner's 1987 novel Crossing to Safety, which I thought was absolutely great, and plan to read The Big Rock Candy Mountain later in the year, along with the new Stegner biography too. Then I went on to David Hajdu's The Ten-Cent Plague: The Grea ... ... attitude, was often hilarious and mostly fun all the way through.
I'd never read Wallace Stegner's 1987 novel Crossing to Safety, but I started it last night, am about a hundred pages along right now, and it's all going down like butter, just great stuff so far.

Alphaorder Finished Crossing to Safety last night and am now about 1/2 way through Astrid and Veronika by Linda Olsson. Beautiful writing. Simple, stark. 38. Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. I enjoyed Stegner's Angle of Repose so much years ago, I really looked forward to this novel, but I struggled to get into it. There wasn't much to draw me in. I'm about half way through Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. I almost gave up on it a hundred pages ago, but I'm sort of into it now. It's not as great as Angle of Repose to be sure. Sort of mindless reading, which is what I need right now, what with a flu bug and not much energy or ... I'm Crossing to Safety with Wallace Stegner in Madison, Wisconsin during the depression. I read Crossing to Safety first, and I got sucked in after a while. I ended up enjoying it. But it hasn't stuck with me like Angle of Repose. kerrlm -- look for the straight brackets instead of the squiggly ones. They're the ones that trigger the touchstones (when they work!) It should look like this:
