The Sector General novels represent to my mind a unique vein within the universe of science fiction novels, stories, etc. I had the pleasure of meeting the author, James White, years ago when I was working in Northern Ireland - and it was a lucky stroke because frankly before then I had never read any of his work, to my loss. I'd actually picked up and read The Galactic Gourmet years ago but picked it up again and reread it because I knew I could depend upon the author for a well written, well presented story with interesting situations and characters. Working as I do in a hospital, the Sector General stories have always had a particular resonance, and this one in particular (I've had to suffer hospital food as a patient as well) was fun and interesting as the celebrity chef causes all sorts of chaos within the multi species wards of Sector General.

It was less engaging where he helps save a planetary population from the effects of their own depredations on their planet's ecology. ( )

Everything in the Sector General series is an enjoyable read. This one has an alien POV protagonsti, Gurronsevas, the greatest chef in the Galactic Federation. ( )

Gurronsevas had long been accustomed to being accorded the outward forms of respect by persons nominally his superior, and usually it was because of his enormous physical strength and body mass, rather than his less obvious attributes of high intelligence and unrivalled professional experience.
