I'd recommend A Concise ChineseEnglish Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo. It's a beautiful novel about a young Chinese woman who goes to study in England, meets an older man, and falls in love. The Xiaolu Guo novel keeps nudging at my brain, to the point where I went back and reread a slice of it last night. I massively under-estimated it at the start of my first reading.

Although it's billed as a romantic comedy, it's somewhat more than that. Lots about language, communication, love and it's an interesting look at Western culture. ... the years? Witty, yet poignant. And, the reaction of the 6 year old is hysterical; I almost wet my pants laughing...

In a Bleak Midwinter by Julia Spencer-Fleming. Excellent first mystery set in upstate New York ... I have finished A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers and have started The Reluctant Fundamentalist, by Moshin Hamid. While still keeping a toe in Burma (and also several other places), I'm in London with A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo which is very good, laugh out loud in some places.
