Little Frances slams the doors, and runs around the upstairs floors. She'll steal your pen or touch your hair, when you're sure there's no one there. The nuns are meant to keep her safe, but she gets out of her own grave. So pull your covers over your head, Little Frances isn't dead ... On a bright spring day in London, Ria Driver sees a face she never thought she'd see again. Coincidence? Or her past coming back to haunt her? Suddenly, Ria is plunged back almost thirty years, to the time she spent as Supervisor at the Convent of Maria Goretti, a rural Irish boarding school. And although she has tried her best to forget, the memories come flooding back. Cold, darkness, isolation, loss ... fear. Fear of the sadistic Mother Benedicta and her cruel punishments. And fear of the noises ... the humming, the footsteps, the knocking ...What was the cause of the sounds from the attic? And who was the child who should not have been there? As events unfold, Ria realises that she can leave the past behind no longer, that her story needs an ending. And to find it, she must go back to where she swore she'd never go again.… (more)

It took me a little while to get through this one, but I ultimately ended up really enjoying it. The beginning was a bit slow and I thought the dialogue took a while to pick up. Once the story within the story started, it got a lot better. The story was interesting, the characters were easy to connect with (or hate), the setting was haunting (I actually got really spooked a couple of times) and the ending was satifying. ( )

Try as I might, I just couldn't get into this book. I was okay with the jumping around in time and I was curious how it all fit together, but the story just didn't grab me. The characters seemed flat, though the description of the setting was very good. ( )

This is the kind of ghost story I like- atmospheric and spooky but not gory! The story is told from 3 different perspectives and hops around a bit but once I got used to that it was full speed ahead! I had trouble putting the book down, and often found myself reading longer than I had planned. The further I got into the story the more interesting it got. The author's description of the old convent and the stern, forbidding Mother Benedicta were truly chilling! I was the lucky winner of this book as a LT Early Reviewer. Thank you LibraryThing! ( )

This was unexpectedly good. I didn't know there would be the supernatural element when i picked up the book and was a little nervous that the book would get weird on me but it was done really well. i enjoyed the structure of the story, going back and forth in time, it tracked well and wasn't confusing and really pulled the story together well. i think my only disappointment was the character of lydia, i really liked her as a teenager but didn't love how her character developed as an adult. a very creepy (in a good way) read!
