#13 - I had some troubles finding Lord of Emperors when I read the duology, apparently it was out of print (at least back then) but I did find a decent and inexpensive copy via Abe. ... the first book of the Sarantine Mosaic for 40p. The nice volunteer in the charity shop went down to the stockroom to see if Lord of Emperors was there but unfortunately she couldn't find it. ... and I couldn't deal with that. Loved Lions of al-Rassan, and thought the second book after Sailing to Sarantium , Lord of Emperors was much better. The first book was blah, but the second has a different POV and is much less limp.
I forget what I posted about. I have been having a ... Just finished Lord Of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay - a fantasy, but a good one.

4. Farewell, My lovely by Raymond Chandler
5. Fear and Loathing in Las ... While wildly unhistorical (and besides, I don't read historical fiction) Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors (a duology) renewed my curiosity about Byzantium, just like The Lions of Al-Rassan fed my interest for the moorish period on the Iberian peninsula. The last I already knew quite ... ... a couple of sequels, The Snake Stone and The Bellini Card

Fantasy lovers, what other authors are like Kay? ... and orc-like creatures"; they're more like Sailing to Sarantium. BTW, did you know that there's a sequel to the latter? Lord of Emperors It ties up the story nicely.
Try Tigana if you're of a mind for some more Kay. ... There are also only 2 of them, so no need to worry about dragging things on too long:
Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors Hi,
a few days ago I painstakingly removed all editions of Herr aller Herrscher from Lord of Emperors, because it's not the same work. Herr aller Herrscher is only the second half of Lord of Emperors because the book was split into two books in the German edition.
Now however, when I ... ... Not my usual fare - I'm hardcore into the character-based stuff - but GOD do I ever love what Maguire does with this book.
Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay. It's epic. It's personal. Every time I finish it I find myself sobbing wretchedly.
Other stuff that's made a huge impact on ... ... actually not bore me. I like royal intrigue type material however, and this book and its sequel do not disappoint.
5. Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay
The conclusion of the Sarantium series. This book was very good and much better than the first half. Packs an emotional wallop ... ... of publication: The Lions of Al-Rassan (Spain at the time of El Cid), the Sarantine Mosaic of Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors (Byzantium at the time of Justinian), and Last Light of the Sun (the British Isles at the time of Alfred the Great). All of them have really minor ... I finished Guy Gavriel Kay's Lord of Emperors tonight. Next up should be Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex, since it needs to get back to the library, but I just read a pop-sci science of sex book, plus my ARC of J. Scott Savage's Farworld: Water Keep just came in the mail ... I don't mind multiple-part fantasy either, just make sure you've got easy access to Lord of Emperors once you finish Sailing to Sarantium, and don't expect much (if anything) to be wrapped up by the end of the first book.
And no, my name came from long before Firefly the show, back ... I'm getting into Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay, and unsurprisingly am really enjoying it, even though I haven't been able to put aside much time for reading.
I finally found a functioning pair of headphones, so I decided to restart listening to The Yiddish Policeman's Union yesterday; I ... ... because it's the first half of a duology, so on its own it feels unfinished (I'm only partway through the second book, Lord of Emperors, at the moment, so I can't really comment on it yet, except that I've heard that a lot of people love it.)
It's set in the same world as Lions of Al-Ras ... ... in the cottage right after Elaira and Arithon have performed the healing. :)
I'm being vague to avoid spoilers, but in Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay, when Valerius is in the corridor under the palace. The two paragraphs about dolphins get me every time.
Lions of Al-Rassan, the Car ... Lord of Emperors is the second half of The Sarantine Mosaic, his one duology. It's definitely best to start with Sailing to Sarantium; the two books are really more like one very long book in two volumes. ... now, and it will definitely be on my top ten list for 2008. On your recommendation, my next Kay will just have to be Lord of Emperors. Is it also a stand-alone? Now that I think of it, I can't remember ~ does Kay even do series? ... .
If I did count rereads, it'd be Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay, with some surprisingly stiff competition from Lord of Emperors, by the same author. ... Yay for research papers on obscure poems. > 18 - The Last Light of the Sun is the one you couldn't remember. What's Bred in the Bone by Robertson Davies. Definitely more magical realism than straight fantasy, but still a damned good look at the way the ... ... is limping... OK?
So I nominate Tigana, The Lions of Al-Rassan, and The Sarantine Mosaic (Sailing to Sarantium & Lord of Emperors).
Also, of course, Ursula K Le Guin. Nominating the Earthsea Cycle (5 books - Tales from Earthsea, A wizard from Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The ... ... Gavriel Kay. Always fun to read, this is the first of a series about a mosaicist in a Roman-like setting. Fun.

My 5 cents is on The Lions of Al-Rassan, or the duo Sailing to Sarantium & Lord of Emperors.
All same author as Tigana above.
And I think that as fantasy goes the original three Earthsea novels is a must-read. I think I have a definite Top 5 now:
Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay (2)

Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner (3)
Fool's Errand by Robin Hobb (3)

Only, I'd probably opt for the collective omnibus version of The Sarantine Mosaic, since I wouldn't want to be without the first volume in the duology. ... ... of Al-Rassan, A Song for Arbonne, Tigana and The Sarantine Mosaic (also as two books - Sailing to Sarantium & Lord of Emperors).
(Haven't read Ysabel so no comment on that one.) Oh, Sailing to Sarantium is good, but it's nothing without the sequel - Lord of Emperors. They really should have been ONE book, but maybe the publisher thought 800+ pages would be too much, or they thought they could make more money on two books than on one?
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it (I ... ... believe the story, and I just can't bring myself around to that.
I think The Sarantine Mosaic (Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors) is a good way to start. Or The Lions of Al-Rassan. But depending on your sensitivity levels that one could possibly contain too much explicit sex?

I'm thinking of Guy Gavriel Kay and the books Sailing to Sarantium & Lord of Emperors. Those two are a duology - The Sarantine Mosaic.
Very good, I ordinarily don't enjoy all these swords'n'sorcery, dragons'n'fairladies and... swineherd ... ... Most books that mean something to me made me sob wretchedly, but the most recent ones have all been by Guy Gavriel Kay: Lord of Emperors, Tigana and The Lions of Al-Rassan. The Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino
The Citadel of the Autarch by Gene Wolfe
Project Pope by Clifford D. Simak ... four: The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice, Taran Wanderer by Lloyd Alexander, Wicked by Gregory Maguire and Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay. Just finished Sailing to Sarantium and last night started Lord of Emperors. Thoroughly enjoying Guy Gavriel Kay as an author, with only the tiniest amount of annoyance at his constantly leaving the reader hanging at a critical moment to switch character point of view. Perhaps this wouldn't ... Adventure and romance? And fantasy? I'd say almost anything by Guy Gavriel Kay. Top picks are Sailing to Sarantium + Lord of Emperors (equals The Sarantine Mosaic), Tigana, A Song for Arbonne and The Lions of Al-Rassan.

No One Writes to the Colonel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez #247 - domeloki - I agree with xicanti, Sailing to Sarantium is a good start! Be sure to get your hands on the sequel,Lord of Emperors, though, because at least to my mind that's where the story really starts going :-) I've had a fantastic reading month. Picking a favourite author is even tougher, but I think I'd go with Mercedes Lackey.
xicanti, you realize that both those Guy Kay books are sequels, right? If you read Lord of Emperors first, go back and read Sailing to Sarantium, which introduces Crispin and the rest of the crew, including Zoticus, maker of interesting birds.

Lord of Emperors : the conclusion of the Sarantine mosaic by Guy Gavriel Kay
(amazingly the default touchstone was for LoTR!) The Darkest Road by Guy Gavriel Kay. I recently finished Lord of Emperors by the same author; it was such an amazing book that I figured anything I read next would be a let-down, so I thought it would be safest to stick to something else by Kay. Thus far it hasn't worked; I'm just pretty ... #167 - It could have been a draw between Lord of emperors & Invader but The Sarantine Mosaic is more of one book divided in two volumes than anything else so it felt more "right" to finish that one first. I intend to read Invader very soon now, so I don't think there's much of a difference, ... #159 - ...adding Mistborn to my list. As you'd expect I agree with you on Lord of emperors - fantastic, so far! ... longer to really get into it, but once I was hooked I was hooked. I can't wait for the sequel!

When that one is finished I WILL read the ones put on hold before picking up Invader... I promise ;-) ... by Brandon Sanderson, (which was fantastic! I can't wait for the rest of the trilogy), and am prepared to start Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay. Today I bought a very pretty copy of Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay, (I love the new Penguin covers for his books!), and my voucher for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. My mother offered to look for a used copy for me at Half Price Books when she goes to Minneapolis later this month, but I'd rather pay a bit more for a nice, (and brand new), Canadian cover. Plus I'm pretty sure I'll be ... ... for only half that sum... A communication error :-(
