However, even though I am not "sold" on whether I am Calvinist or Armenian, I felt that James White was a much better debater and made much more convincing points. I wish they had chosen a better Armenian than Dave Hunt as I felt his positions were weak. I do read James White's blog (Alpha and Omega Ministries), but I did not know of him beyond that. I had never heard of Dave Hunt. However, it was even evident that Mr. Hunt wasn't as educated on the matters of Calvinism or, in my opinion, in general. Nonetheless I very much enjoyed the book although it was dry in some places. ( )Spurgeon was born at Kelvedon, June 19, 1834. He was an intellectual preacher. Not many of them are left now that D. James Kennedy is dead. Ravi Zacharias is certainly one. Charles Spurgeon preached the gospel to simple country folk in the great outdoors as a teenager. He gained immense popularity giving his ability as an orator to convey his thoughts and feelings alongside the gospel. While still a youth he was offered a pastorship at a grandly gothic church near Cambridge. His rise to power is extremely entertaining giving that he faced much resistance from traditionalists. He did not preach by shouting and spitting and convulsing. This man accomplished so much good while caring so little for his own status. It's unreal to find out how much he is responsible for. Later his Baptist brethren rejected him. In my opinion this furthers his character. Though the people wanted him to branch off and start his own unique denomination, he would not bring further dissention to the body of Christ. This simple book has many details of the Prince of Preachers not found in larger tomes. The data on the Down-Grade Controversy alone makes it worth the small purchase price. no reviews | add a review
