This book is a great mixture of different elements. It's part sci-fi and part historical novel, you'll find aliens and you'll find pirates, some parts are action packed and some parts are hilarously funny. And on top of that you'll get some extremely hot (and inventive) sex. No wonder when one of the characters is a 7 foot tall, alpha male, alien warrior with a sex organ a little bit better endowed than it's human counterpart. What a package (pun intended)!

Talos, the above mentioned warrior and bounty hunter from the race of the Oracans, lives in the 26th century and is asked to bring the pirate Aidan Maymon from the 18th to the 26th century, to enrich the archaeological knowledge of Earth's mankind. Talos never ment to see more in the likable Aidan than a simple bounty, everything else would be a punishable violation of his personal code of honor and the strict rules of his warrior race. But the instant attraction between Talos and Aidan is undeniable and soon he can't help but fall in love with Aidan. But will it be possible to alter the Details of the Hunt and turn his bounty into his lifemate?

I just loved this book and can recommend it without hesitation as a must read. It's a great mixture of different elements which blend perfectly with each other. What I especially liked about this book is the believable description of how Aidan struggles with the life and the culture in the 26th century, which is completely foreign to him. And I loved the sex scenes, too. ;-) ( )

A 26th century alien bounty hunter named Talos goes back to the 18th century to snatch a human pirate named Maymon. Talos finds himself falling in love with Maymon during his captivity.

My first book by Baumbach, A Bit of Rough, left me very underwhelmed. It was meant to be gay romance, but it was just gay. It wasn't romance. Or, more accurately, there was a rushed development of romance, and I wasn't very convinced. I also read one other book after I finished Details of the Hunt. Out There in the Night had a lot of things I liked about Details of the Hunt, but ultimately I didn't care for the main character or his big Native American shapeshifter lover. Aside from the stereotypical characters, the plot was also not as imaginative as in Details of the Hunt. I didn't read either of those two books to the end, which makes me wonder if Details of the Hunt is the only good book Baumbach has written.

Details of the Hunt is about a pirate named Maymon, who is snatched from his time by an alien bounty hunter from the future. He walks with a tipsy swagger and has long dreadlocks decorated with beads. And he talks like this: "Set the sails, me hearties!" "Get to it, mates!" "Until then, this is still my ship. Savvy?" Sound familiar?

Aside from (or maybe because of) the blatant similarity to Johny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack, I think his character is endearing and fun. He has funny ideas about Cemi gods and he treats women like his equals. And his swear words are choice and... colorful. "A curse on you and your bitch mother's black heart for ever giving birth to the likes of you, you son of a cunt-slurping whore."

I really enjoyed reading about a fun, feisty character. I also think his love interest, Talos, is a perfect match for him. Talos is part of an alien race from the future, whose species are capable of time travel. Talos receives a mission to bring in the pirate, but while keeping Maymon in custody, Talos starts falling in love. He tries hard not to because Maymon is his bounty and can never really be his, but he has a soft spot for humans and a naturally warm heart, so it's not long before he's head over heels. And oh, can this boy angst! I really like how their romance is played out, and I feel for Talos. Maymon gets into wild situations because he's not used to the era, and Talos constantly has to bail him out. He spends half the time exasperated with Maymon's antics, but there's absolutely no doubt that he's in love.

Baumbach does an excellent job of worldbuilding. In the beginning of the book, you feel like you're sailing the seas with Maymon and his pirates, and when he is taken to the future, you feel disoriented in a new world. The set-up of time traveling and space stations and examination rooms are well done. Baumbach also introduces a host of alien characters and interesting cultures. I was most interested in seeing the humans of the future world. They haven't changed so much. Some are kind like Dr. Rice, and some use their power to manipulate and threaten, like Barlow. I really enjoyed losing myself in Baumbach's world.

Details of the Hunt is a fun read, and people who enjoy sci-fi romances will love this one. I like it enough that I will be getting the sequel, Genetic Snare, as soon as it's released. ( )

An excellent science fiction adventure! I originally purchased this as an e-book, but happily bought it again when it became available in paperback--it was that good.

26th Century. Talos is an Oracan Hunter who can travel through time. A shady human business man contracts him to bring him an 18th Century pirate named Aidan Maymon for "historical knowledge." Talos gets more than he bargained for from his wiley captive, including falling in love with him. But, how can he save Maymon when he is supposed to be the property of another?

The "chemistry" between the bounty hunter and the pirate was believable, and the sex was extremely inventive (and hot). The story had a lot of humor as well since Talos has an affinity for using 19th Century gangster slang and Aidan is constantly in trouble trying to adapt to 26th century technology. The story was very well written, with clever dialog and fleshed out secondary characters. The author obviously put a lot of effort into creating her futuristic world.

This is the first in an expected series (yeah!) and was nominated for an EPPIE Award and also placed in the top ten of the 2006 P&E Readers Poll in the SciFi novel category. ( )
