Ouch, I must be getting old, I should have remembered Earth Abides and I Am Legend.

#92 - Loads. Earth Abides, Survivors, The Empty World. In most of these the apocalypse happens near the beginning of the book, and most of the narrative is survivors dealing with the aftermath.

... a good, quirky yarn. One reviewer compares it favorably to Robinson's The Wild Shore and I enjoyed that a lot, too. Earth Abides is foremost in my opinion.

California Stewart, George R.: Earth Abides Fiction/Fantasy It was appropriate to read this book up at our house in Vallejo, which is near San Francisco where the story is set. It was eerie reading so close to the area where the story takes place. I can easily visualize the area ...

It's probably on the link above, but I suggest Earth Abides.

#9 Great suggestions. 'Fire' and 'Storm' both by Stewart have no villains, it is humanity v. nature. Then you have Earth Abides again by Stewart and On the Beach by Shute both post-apocalyptic stories, one about survival and the other is about facing death. All are great books. I have a few ...

MusicMom, I'm glad you've had a chance to read Earth Abides and I'll definitely read your review on your site. The other two post-apocalyptic books you discovered look very interesting, especially the Jack London one. Maybe I'll make "post-apocalyptic" a category for next year. I think I ...

It took a long time to come from a "distant" library but I finally read Earth Abides this week. It was appropriate to read this week because we are up at our house in Vallejo, which is near San Francisco (where I was born, incidentally--SF that is) so it was kind of eerie reading the story so ...

Argh, another message eaten. I posted this morning that I am always lurking here. #122 I highly recommend you read Earth Abides. I loaned it to a friend at work and we were both really impressed by it. #223 You might like The Private Diary of Mr. Darcy. It's different from most of the fanfiction I've read. #224 It's been awhile since I've even tried for an ER book, ...

... as a lot of it seems to be depressing. I did the quiz as well and like you, I'm a dedicated reader which suits me fine! Earth Abides sounds interesting, I'll look out for it.

I would tend to agree with the recommendations of The Stand, Earth Abides, and On the Beach. However, Swan Song is the worst trash that I've ever tried to read. I forced myself about a third of the way through it, but had to quit. It was terrible. Lucifer's Hammer is an interesting ...

Hmm... Jem, by Frederik Pohl, is also at-the-moment-of apocalypse, and well worth reading. Earth Abides. Excellent novel. If you don't mind fantasy mixed in with your Science Fiction, have a look at Wolf In Shadow, which is quite enjoyable. Day of the Triffids deals with the ...

Just finished Earth Abides by George R. Stewart, and I really liked it. One of the best books I've read so far this year.

BOOK 59 Earth Abides by George R. Stewart 345 Pages This apocalyptic novel is different from any other book of it's type that I've read in the past. Though published in 1949, it's not outdated and it's not the horror story that many of the more current apocalyptic novels are. It's more ...

Earth Abides would be great for your 999 Challenge. I think it was the first winner of the International Fantasy Award (fantasy in the sense of science fiction in the early days, and not in the sense of fairies and magic) in the early '50's. I love early science fiction stories because it's so ...

... I should go to the library and get some really good nanny books and that will fill up my numbers. Ha ha ha I did finish Earth Abides and really loved it. It was written in 1947 and is a post-apocalypse story which is remarkably believable. However George Stewart did it, he did foresee some ...

#99 - I agree with you about The Stand. It's the only Stephen King book I've read, and I did think of it while reading Earth Abides and wondered if King borrowed his story line from Stewart's earlier, much better book.

I finished Earth Abides before this swine flu thing got going. Still, it has really been haunting me too. I loaned it to my daughter-in-law and she said that it is even worse if you "start" reading it with all this going on in the news. She is kind of creeped out, actually. Carol-O, it is ...

All the swine flu news feels a little deja vu after reading Earth Abides...if my life had a soundtrack there would be that spooky is-this-a-coincidence-or-not kind of music playing right now.

I am reading Earth Abides for the book group some Librarythingers started here, in RL. It grabbed my attention immediately and I find it ironic to be reading right now. The main premise is that the vast bulk of humanity dies due to an epidemic....(ah, bring anything to mind....pigs?).....and ...

88. Earth Abides by George R. Stewart One of the early (1949!) apocalyptic science fiction novels, Earth Abides is a well-regarded classic. I'd heard of it years before and always meant to pick up a copy. There's a new printing out now, and when I saw it at the library, I think I nearly ...

I remember being on some sort of post-apocalyptic jag one day at Half-Price Books. I picked up Earth Abides, On the Beach and Alas, Babylon all on the same trip.

I remember being on some sort of post-apocalyptic jag one day at Half-Price Books. I picked up Earth Abides, On the Beach and Alas, Babylon all on the same trip.

More post-apocalyptic dystopia than scary, but I've just started Earth Abides. Classic from 1949 about civilization (or lack thereof) after a plague wipes out most of the human population. So far, it's beating The Stand all to heck and back.

>20 I Am Legend is a worthy entry in the literature of post-apocalypse tale-making. I favor Earth Abides, written in 1949, and very sound even now. I understand that it leaves out the fascinating new possibilities of "what happens to the Internet in a post-apocalyptic world?" and imagine the ...

Wow. Busy reading time. I have not been able to focus too much on that, but my brother has a copy of Earth Abides by George R. Stewart which is a post-apocalyptic novel written in 1949, set then, and positing a world in which mankind vanishes because the earth threw itself a population-contr ...

I just started the Earth Abides by George R. Stewart. I figured that since I read so many post-apocalyptic books that I was very remiss in not reading one of the first.

Check out Malevil by Robert Merle. I liked it as much, or more, as Earth Abides and Lucifer's Hammer. The survivors story covers about the same length of time as in Earth Abides but the survivors are a very different group. I had a hard time finding a hardback copy but I think paperbacks ...

#98 - I agree re Earth Abides. What makes this and Day of the Triffids (and other successful fiction in this genre) so good is that they contain recognisable people with whom most readers can identify. Whereas I didn't get on too well with Canticle for Leibowitz as there were too few ...

I think one of the points of Earth Abides is that what the survivors would do depends a great deal on the abilities and character of the group. Ish, as an academic with an observer's outlook, was not prone to start things on his own unless forced by necessity, but rather would either wait for ...

8: thingmaker, Don't know how I forgot to put Earth Abides on my list and I'll have to look up The Scarlet Plague as I uasaully like Jack London

Earth Abides by George R. Stewart (1949). Not the first (Note: Jack London's "The Scarlet Plague" 1912 was even set in the same area), but a very memorable post apocalypse novel. H.G. Wells The Time Machine I recommend this highly - more so even than The War of the Worlds. It's not ...

I'm happy to call Earth Abides overlooked. It's not in print/stocked over here in Australia so if you want it you have to order it from overseas (or wait and pay too much for a book store to do it for you). I'm glad it's in the Masterworks series now. It'll get more exposure again. A few ...

Earth Abides is in the SF Masterworks series here in the UK, so it's not hard to find copies. I read it only a month or so ago. I can't say I thought it was all that great.

Was it Earth Abides?

Hallo, This is Earth Abides, by George R. Stewart. I really enjoyed it, it was distrubing but thought provoking. Hope that helps. Edited to add: Doh! Just saw the other topic! (grin)

He mentioned that it was indeed earth abides in another thread. what I recall about it is the scene where he picks up his old hammer with a broken handle to crack a nut the children react as if Thor had picked up his war hammer.

Earth Abides

Are you sure about the date on that? The plot sounds an awful lot like Earth Abides by George R. Stewart ... but this book was written in 1949.

One of the most overlooked books has to Earth Abides by George R. Stewart. The first time I finished this book, I couldn't read anything else for three days. I just had to think about what I read. I would like to see someone do a high quality movie based on this book.

... from Zelazny and Sturgeon. Along the lines of Wilhelm's Where Last the Sweet Birds Sang (which I liked) is Stewart's Earth Abides. I would also love to discuss Calculating God by Robert Sawyer - though it brought me to tears several times.
