Kind of a story-within-a-story idea. The narrator, who is himself a fiction writer, gets dragged into a noirish subgenre thriller, and tries to figure out what is going on, who is after what, and why. Add into the balance an ex-wife and a lesbian assistant/secretary, and you have enough fanciful plot devices to take you through to the end. Entertaining, if unexceptional. ( )
