This novel tells the story of two orphans Hilly (Hillary) and her little brother Egg (Greg) who agree to leave their native Britain after WW2 and come to Australia on the promise of a better life. Hilly believes that when she and her brother arrive in Australia, they will be adopted by a kind family and be taken off to a farm to ride horses and pick fruit in the sun. The truth is far from this idealised version - Greg is sent to a boy's home in Fremantle and Hilly to a girl's one in Adelaide. Hilly comes under the care of some brutal nuns who take all her possessions, beat her for the slightest transgression and starve and work herself and the other orphans to the bone. Hilly discovers that there is little chance of adoption and after asking in vain, if they can help her find her brother, she decides to write to the new queen of England in the hope thast she can help. When this letter seems to do no good, Hilly makes up her mind to confront the Queen when she is on a visit to Adelaide, on the pretence of presenting her with a bunch of roses stolen from the orphanage garden. Will she ever see her brother again or will she have to ensure the sadistic cruelty of the nuns until she turns 14 and can leave the orphange forever?
