One of four extraordinary graphic novels celebrating the Big Apple, from the master of American comics art. A story filled with ghosts, and a testament to our greatest human qualities -- a deeply moving chronicle of a city building and the people who inhabited it. So much tragedy and human heartache surrounding one building: the story of Monroe, a man trying to save all the children of New York after an accident involving a young boy changes his entire life; PJ Hammond and his singular obsession to buy the building he grew up in; the love affair between Gilda and poor poet, Benny in the shadow of the building (until Gilda goes and marries someone else for money); and Antonio Tonatti, the man who loved to play music in front of the majestic building until it was torn down. One building, so many stories. It’s as if the giant structure made of glass and steel stood guard over all these lives. There is one final story which ties all the other stories together. It’s bittersweet and beautiful. Quintessential New York. ( )

Por mucho que leo de Eisner no logro desbancar a 'Contrato con Dios' de mis favoritos, pero 'El edificio' quedaría en un honorable segundo lugar. Las cuatro historias que convergen en el edificio Hammond son emotivas y brillantes. ( )

The first Graphic Novel that I read from Mr. Eisner and it is still my favorite. Four touching stories that surround an old building and entertwine in a climatic ending.

The sepia tones add a timeless touch to the work.

What can I say? In two words: Will Eisner! ( )

The four stories don't quite live up to Eisner's premise: that buildings are infused with "an invisible accumulation of dramas", the "residue of psychic debris" from the human interactions situated there. As Neil Gaiman put it in his forward, Eisner delves into "what is left behind when a building is torn down."

Still, the narrative structure is simple and appropriate, with the four stories from the building's past culminating in another story occurring in the present. Eisner adopts a melodramatic tone after the fashion of Twilight Zone or early comics. The fifth story isn't so much surprising as a Sigma Sum.

The line drawings and facial / body expressions are good, the mix of realism and comic-book caricature matching what I've come to associate with Golden Age comics. Solid work, I'd just hoped for something as intriguing as the premise but this title, at least, fell just short. ( )

Epigraph
"Old buildings are not ours. They belong, partly to those who built them, and partly to the generations of mankind who are to follow us. The dead still have their right to them: That which they labored for ... we have no right to obliterate.

"What we ourselves have built, we are at liberty to throw down. But what other men gave their strength, and wealth and life to accomplish, their right over it does not pass away with their death."
