First Thoughts: what a great coming of age story. love these characters! need to read The Off Season soon!
Review: soon 73. The Off Season by Catherine Murdock At first, I wasn't sure if this one would be as good as Dairy Queen, but I thought it was better! I can't wait for my library to get the third book (Front and Center)!

Dairy Queen and its sequel The Off-Season are awesome - everyone I've recommended them to has loved them.
Artichoke's Heart is one of my very favourites from last year.
While it's not a top ... ... Gideon the Cutpurse, excellent series. I recommend listening to the audio book; the narrator does an excellent job.

3. The Hunt Club by Brett Lott
4. Lizard People by Charlie Price - a quick read with ... I liked Dairy Queen and the Off Season as well. I just read Whale Talk and it has similarly great dialogue (though not as humorous) as John Green. You might also try Rats Saw God which is a more 90's era high school story, but fun too. Don't forget, if you like Dairy Queen there is the sequel called The Off Season. That was good as well. I really liked City of Ashes, City of Bones....just a suggestion. So far, this year I have read:
The Off Season by Catherine Murdock This was a great book, about a girl who is a dairy farmer becoming the first girl football player in Wisconsin. It was a weird book but good. 4/5

(My touchstones are all screwed up on those, not sure why, but both are by Jack Ketchum) Finished Little, Big (and posted on the thread) -- next up looks like The Off Season by Catherine Gilbert Murdock. I third the recs for Dairy Queen and The Off Season, they are both contemporary and have female protagonists, but aren't "girly" stories.
I also enjoyed Shug by Jenny Han although it might be a little young for 10th grade.
Sweetblood by Pete Hautman was also a good story of a ... A second on Dairy Queen, and the sequel, Off Season is good, as well. I'd also recommend Beauty Shop for Rent by Laura Bowers. Hawksong by Amelia Atw ... Finished The Off Season by Catherine Murdock--I hadn't read the plot description so the book went in a direction I didn't anticipate, which I actually think made the book more interesting. I really hope Murdock continues to write more books about DJ and her family. Never heard of Ketchum? Then I think your in for a treat. I would recommend starting with Off Season, Ladies Night and then The Girl Next Door. That's the start I made and now I'm Ketchum lovin' son of a gun! ... Sticks (it's a purl thing) YA
