I finished The Coffee Trader and I can't really decide whether I liked it or not. Music Mom I'm so glad I'm not the only one who felt disappointed by The Coffee Trader. I had high expectations for it, but ended up feeling like I'd had to drink a cup of instant Folger's with no sugar or cream instead of a Carmel Macchiatto from Starbuck's! I'm always nervous when I post a ... I started The Coffee Trader earlier this year and got about halfway through and it sort of got abandoned--not purposely but I just didn't pick it up again. How he can write about a time and place so long ago yet make it seem like something we should learn from today is amazing. I love the way he writes. Aside from learning ... I'm a big David Liss fan too, I've read The Conspiracy of Paper and Whiskey Rebels (ARC here). The Coffee Trader is in the hopper. He's a very intelligent writer, exciting as well, lets the reader think some for her/himself. He also weaves finance into each book, which sounds boring, but ... ... of a priceless medieval Jewish text.

I hope I do a much better job this time around than I did for the coffee trader-- I got overwhelmed by grad school and never finished that one... Here's hoping for a more successful attempt! After 50 pages, I've decided to set The Coffee Trader aside for now. I've switched to The Day Wall Street Exploded, and I'm much happier with it. I guess that I'm just not in the mood for fiction right now. ... I should finish that up today. After that, I'm going for a quick change of pace. So many people here have been discussing The Coffee Trader that I've decided to give that a go. If that doesn't work out for me, my backup plan is The Day Wall Street Exploded. It'd be fun to both read Less Than Angels; and yes, I imagine Going Dutch would be a great factual background to The Coffee Trader. I tried A Conspiracy of Paper, as I loved the setting, but found Liss told too much to flatly about his characters' thoughts, for me. (He may, of ... ... your review of Going Dutch (BTW your touchstone is wrong). I think I would enjoy that one, especially after reading Coffee Trader. It's going on my TBR--but it will have to wait while I figure out where to put it!

I second the Zimmler recommendation. A nice companion to his Hunting Midnight is The Coffee Trader by David Liss. I'm almost finished with the second David Liss book, The Coffee Trader. Really good description of economic culture in seventeenth-century Holland. The first Liss book A Conspiracy of Paper was another good one, I thought. I'm in the middle of The Coffee Trader by David Liss - it's the second one of his I've read, having enjoyed A Conspiracy of Paper. Good historical fiction.
