I would stay away from any long series or trilogies.
... writers in the 1940s and 1950s. They wrote separately but are probably best remembered for their collaborations, of which The Space Merchants is the most famous. Wolfbane was first published in 1959. The plot was a departure from traditional genre themes: to start a novel with the Earth ... ... Sturgeon was published in book form in 1953. The same year as Blish's A Case Of Conscience. You could even add in The Space Merchants and Gladiator-at-Law by Pohl and Kornbluth and A Mirror For Observers by Pangborn. all in the 50s.

I think any of these would lead to a lively group discussions. I'll second (or whatever) the recommendations of A Canticle for Leibowitz, The Left Hand of Darkness and The Space Merchants.
Also, something by Philip K. Dick. The easiest ones to use for your purposes would be Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and The Man in the High Castle.
... ... short ones include Bester's The Stars My Destination (based partly on The Count of Monte Cristo), Pohl and Kornbluth's The Space Merchants, LeGuin's The Left Hand of Darkness (really fascinating gender roles theme here).

"Catch ... I just got done re-reading The Space Merchants by Frederik Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth a couple days ago.
Now I'm reading the sequel, The Merchants' War, and The Relativity of Wrong, an essay collection by Isaac Asimov. Another fine dystopian novel is The Space Merchants by Frederik Pohl and C.M. Kornbluth. Along the same lines is a recent novel, Jennifer Government by Max Barry.
