I read this the 2nd time and I still liked it. The main characters banter leads to sexual tension and Johanna Lindsey just knows how to turn things up. The characters were very likable and there are a lot of witty remarks, sass, and humor. I think I'll still enjoy it if I read it again and again. I liked the adventure and the plot development, there were a few surprises here and there and it always made me wonder how the girl and the guy would end up together in love, not just in lust. Definitely 5 stars! ( )

Gabrielle Brooks leaves the safety of England in search of her missing father. Her ship is attacked by pirates and she finds herself captive on their Caribbean island; only later to learn that her very own father is one their leaders. What a surprise! She spends 3 years with him treasure hunting and enjoying a very exciting, sun-filled life. The pirates she meets along the way are a hoot.

There are few marriageable men around the islands so Gabrielle reluctantly ends up back in London to husband hunt. She is sponsored by an old acquaintance of her father, James Mallory. Unfortunately, Drew Anderson, a pirate hating, marriage avoiding, sea captain and exasperating rogue, spoils her chances with the ton by basically calling her pirate trash. Drew is unremorseful which is where the bulk of the story begins.

Gabrielle, who had originally set her sites on Drew as a potential husband, takes revenge by hijacking his ship and holding him captive. Then comes the typical swash buckling pirate action with battles and damaging storms. Gabrielle is bent on rescuing her father from the evil Pierre Lacross. Drew is bent on getting his ship back. Even the Mallory’s are in on the action, bent on rescuing Drew from so-called pirates.

The plot does get a bit silly when everything starts to converge toward the end. It’s a mess. There is plenty of witty banter between Drew and Gabrielle, but the love story was not at all convincing. I didn’t like Drew, he was just plain rude all the time. There was no reason for Gabrielle to love him, except maybe his gorgeous body and the reader will soon tire of reading about his dashing figure. Drew could have been much better behaved.

The Mallory’s, James and Georgina are the best part of the story. It’s too bad the book wasn’t devoted entirely to them. ( )

This wasn’t her best, not compared to the rest of her books. There were way too many dry spots and I never felt pulled in or that magical connection. The story also lacked believability and seemed a bit phony. The pluses are the characters - all are well defined. The plot was interesting enough, but lacked the above to pull it all together. The ending did have some surprise to it, which I was grateful. All-in-all, it’s not a bad read, just not her best. Her best can take my breath away. ( )

The fact that Gabrielle could overlook the crudeness Drew showed her, believing she was actually a pirate and free with her body. I like James & Georgina,Drew's parents and assigned escorts in London society for Gabrielle to find a husband. The pirates on her father's ship were delightful, as well. ( )

When Gabrielle Brooks arrives back in London after living with her father in St. Kitts, she is expecting to marry someone mundane who might allow her to travel back to the Carribbean every now and then. She meets Drew Anderson instead, the American brother-in-law of Lady James Mallory. Romance of course ensues, though the variety of subplots and minor characters does mean readers will need to pay attention. ( )

Book description
Gabrielle is sailing to The Carribean searching for her merchant father, Nathan Brooks. The ship is suddenly overtaken by pirates and Gabrielle is captured. Gabrielle spends many days on a pirate island. A vile pirate named Pierre decides he wants Gabrielle for his own. Nathan arrives and saves her. Then he explains how he came to be a pirate.

Gabrielle spends several happy years with her father on his island home but the time comes when Nathan sends Gabrielle back to England to find a suitable husband. He sends her to his friend James Malory.

There, Gabrielle meets James' brother-in-law Drew. The attraction between Gabrielle and Drew simmers between them. One passionate kiss confirms Gabrielle's feelings toward him but she needs to fine a suitable husband and Drew is not looking for a wife. Drew inadvertently ruins Gabrielle's reputation by announcing that she is a pirate. Just as the scandal spreads, one of Nathan's crew comes to inform Gabrielle that Nathan is being held prisoner by Pierre and Pierre wants Gabrielle in exchange.

Drew's ship is about to set sail and Gabrielle and her father's crew overtake it to save her father. Drew can't decide which frustrates him more, his attraction to Gabrielle or his fury over being held captive on his own ship.

Gabriel decides to make Drew pay for ruining her reputation in England by making him wild for her and then leaving him flat, but Drew turns the tables on her. Once he has had her, Drew can't get Gabrielle off his mind. He agrees to help save Gabrielle's father and in the process, he and Gabrielle are growing closer, but their stubborn pride keeps getting in the way.

Drew thinks rescuing Gabrielle's father is going to be fairly simple, especially when James arrives, but Pierre isn't giving up easily. When they lose each other during the fight, Drew and Gabrielle finally realize their feelings are much deeper than they thought. If they can save Nathan and escape the pirates, they will have a chance to embrace the unexpected love they found in each other's arms.

Captive Of My Desires is a lovely historical romance. Gabrielle is delightful. She can take care of herself and yet she is vulnerable and sweet as well. Drew is charming and sexy. When they finally let go of their stubborn pride, Drew and Gabrielle make a loving couple and the stolen moments they share are very passionate. Daring pirates and thrilling sea voyages, make Captive Of My Desires a very exciting and entertaining story.
