There were way too many dry spots and I never felt pulled in or that magical connection. The story also lacked believability and seemed a bit phony. The pluses are the characters - all are well defined. The plot was interesting enough, but lacked the above to pull it all together. The ending did have some surprise to it, which I was grateful. All-in-all, it’s not a bad read, just not her best. Her best can take my breath away. The fact that Gabrielle could overlook the crudeness Drew showed her, believing she was actually a pirate and free with her body. I like James & Georgina,Drew's parents and assigned escorts in London society for Gabrielle to find a husband. The pirates on her father's ship were delightful, as well. When Gabrielle Brooks arrives back in London after living with her father in St. Kitts, she is expecting to marry someone mundane who might allow her to travel back to the Carribbean every now and then. She meets Drew Anderson instead, the American brother-in-law of Lady James Mallory. Romance of course ensues, though the variety of subplots and minor characters does mean readers will need to pay attention. 0.145 seconds to build listing

There are few marriageable men around the islands so Gabrielle reluctantly ends up back in London to husband hunt. She is sponsored by an old acquaintance of her father, James Mallory. Unfortunately, Drew Anderson, a pirate hating, marriage avoiding, sea captain and exasperating rogue, spoils her chances with the ton by basically calling her pirate trash. Drew is unremorseful which is where the bulk of the story begins.
Gabrielle, who had originally set her sites on Drew as a potential husband, takes revenge by hijacking his ship and holding him captive. Then comes the typical swash buckling pirate action with battles and damaging storms. Gabrielle is bent on rescuing her father from the evil Pierre Lacross. Drew is bent on getting his ship back. Even the Mallory’s are in on the action, bent on rescuing Drew from so-called pirates.
The plot does get a bit silly when everything starts to converge toward the end. It’s a mess. There is plenty of witty banter between Drew and Gabrielle, but the love story was not at all convincing. I didn’t like Drew, he was just plain rude all the time. There was no reason for Gabrielle to love him, except maybe his gorgeous body and the reader will soon tire of reading about his dashing figure. Drew could have been much better behaved.
The Mallory’s, James and Georgina are the best part of the story. It’s too bad the book wasn’t devoted entirely to them. (
