Cross Dressing in Connemara Cuigear Chonamara (The Connemara Five), a new play by writer and publisher Micheal O Conghaile, has just been published by Clo Iar-Chonnachta. The play will run in An Taibhdhearc Theatre, Galway, from 8 - 18 October, and will be staged in THEatre SPACE@HENRY PLACE, Dublin at the end of the month. Cuigear Chonamara is set in modern-day Connemara, and focuses on the lives of its five characters, each of whom is imprisoned in a life that suppresses their spirits. Coated with dark humour, the play echoes with the loneliness and frustrations of these Connemara prisoners - Danny, the closet transvestite; Cynthia, his committed girlfriend; Darach, his brutish brother; Coilmin, his slightly-confused father; and Meaigi, the neighbour and friend. The play is a window on the lives of many people in rural communities, and stands in sharp contrast to the idealism often associated with rural life. Its humour and poignancy are all the more potent because it comes uncomfortably close to the reality of life for many in Connemara. Cuigear Chonamara won the Foras na Gaeilge prize at the Listowel Writers Week this year, and also the Stewart Parker / BBC Radio Ulster Award. It is Micheal O Conghaile's first play, although he has previously translated two works by Martin McDonagh: Banrion Alainn an Lionain (The Beauty Queen of Leenane) and Ualach an Uaignis (The Lonesome West). Micheal O Conghaile is a prolific and versatile writer who has received numerous prizes for his work, including a nomination on the shortlist for The Irish Times Literary Award 2001, and The Foras na Gaeilge Award at Listowel Writers Week 2001.… (more)

Cúigear Chonamara is set in modern-day Connemara, and explores the lives of five characters, each of whom is trapped in a life that is draining their spirits. At times humorous, and at times poignant, this play is another feather in the cap of its esteemed writer. Cúigear Chonamara won the Foras na Gaeilge prize at the Listowel Writers Week this year, and also won the Stuart Parker Award. It is Micheál Ó Conghaile's first play, although he has previously translated two works by Martin McDonagh; Banríon Álainn an Líonáin (The Beauty Queen of Leenane) and Ualach an Uaignis (The Lonesome West).
