This is a throbbing sensual romance about the serving girl who falls in love with the prince, set among America's East Coast aristocracy, involving also a murder mystery which is resolved by a caring and sensitive police detective who violates all credible investigative routine to do so. There is much flashbacking to the mid-20th century (the book was written and set in 1988). I got hold of it for the totally spurious reason that one of the characters, described as 'somber yet dashing', rejoices in the name of Nicholas Whyte, but he turns out to have little to do with the plot. Will appeal to steamy romance readers but doesn't really pull off the police procedural leg of the plot. ( )

Rather engrossing story with interesting characters. Too many of them at first, to identify with them but this really needed to be read twice to appreciate it. ( )

Cassie, the loyal housekeeper for the Warrens and her daughter (Gill Warren: dad), Katia, who grew up with and adores the Warren and Whyte children. Deborah & Mark White (a pervert!) were murdered. The investigatior, Robert Cavanaugh assigned to the case found evidence that Jordan Whyte had killed his brother and sister-in-law. I really liked the detective and appreciated the fact that there was no love interest (only his girlfriend). It turned out the head of police was involved with the murder. I loved the family togetherness in this book. Jordan thought Katia was his half-sister and hesitated falling in love with her. ( )

Book description
Katia Morell never looked at Jordan Whyte without wanting him. From the time she was a child, his laughter stirred her heart, his touch heated her blood. She had never stopped dreaming of him in all the years since she had escaped from the glittering life of his famous and wealthy family. A housekeeper's beautiful daughter Katia had shared dazzling island Summers, gleaming yachts, fabulous parties... but it was never really her world. Just as Jordan was never hers... until now. The tragic and mysterious death of Jordan's brother had brought Katia from her successful New York career back to the Whyte mansion to offer her help... only to surrender to desire. But even while Jordan's caresses claimed her and his hands possessed her, she felt dark currents sweeping her to heartbreak ... as wealth clashed with passion, and secrets hid in the midnight embrace of a rich man's love.
