#34 -- Good point! It seems like all Hogwarts property should be magically protected. I'm remembering another book (Charmed Life) where items taken from the house start shouting "I belong to Chrestomanci Castle! ... I'd probably end up wanting to punch Master Li, but it would be interesting.
Millie Chant (Chrestomanci's wife) from Charmed Life, etc. She's a lot more formidable than people expect from looking at her, but she is kind and has a knack for making people feel at home and comfortable.
Ru ... I'm reading a lot of Diana Wynne Jones.
*Charmed Life
*Witch Week

and when I've finished Howl,
*Castle in the Air I'm in a Diana Wynne Jones shtick this week, reading Charmed Life, Howl's Moving Castle, and as I'm almost finished with Howl, Castle in the Air.

There are certainly others that might fit there - the other Enchanted Forest books, for instance, and The Lives of Christopher Chant ... Touchstones still seem to be acting up, shockingly enough. Hopefully they'll work here:

I'm not sure which would be considered the 'first' book - maybe The Lives of Christopher Chant? I also love Charmed Life, The Pinhoe Egg, and Conrad's Fate.
Books by Nick Bantock:

Technically there are five books, but I like the first ... ... *The Pinhoe Egg by Diana Wynne Jones (480)
Loved it, absolutely loved it. I love the old Chrestomanci books like Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant but the latest ones are, if possible, even better. This one starts out just a little bit slow with some necessary build-up, ... I finished Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones earlier today. I really disliked it at first, but it grew on me. I think I'll probably look for the rest of the series.
Now I'm about to start Master & Commander by Patrick O'Brian. I've been looking forward to it; here's hoping it's as ... ... bad, just not interesting to me. Love The Hobbit, like LOTR, but I'd rather read Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci stories (Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant) if I want children-learning-magic and anything by Enid Blyton or Rudyard Kipling's Stalky and Co. if I want ... ... I really wanted to read The Lives of Christopher Chant, but I must have left that at my parents' house. I like this one ... ... LibraryThing recommended it, probably because I live Eva Ibbotson, and I enjoyed it very much. I'm now listening to A Charmed Life.
