A third vote for Ellen Kushner's books. I've just finished Swordspoint on a transatlantic flight, and it mightily distracted me from the immense discomforts of the trip!

... have really minor instances of magic, but nothing that intrudes upon the story. Also going to echo the recommendation of Swordspoint, The Fall of the Kings and The Privilege of the Sword by Ellen Kushner. They take place in the same city over the course of a century but can be read ...

Finished 2 books by Ellen Kushner: Swordspoint and The Privilege of the Sword. The stories are set in a fantasy land but not a magical land. They were interesting for the political manueverings and for the code of the swordspersons. I don't expect I would re-read these, but I would ...

I've tagged the both Swordspoint and its sequels and Sorcery and Cecilia and its sequels as "Fantasy of manners" along with Caroline Stevermers A College of Magics and A Scholar of Magics and Wen Spencers A Brothers Price. For me to tag a book "Fantasy of manners" requires it to ...

... liens. And Maledicte by Lane Robins (First Book) was my favorite read of the year. Very much like Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint series, only better. Very dark, lots of black humor, and good heart at the end.

Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint and The Privilege of the Sword, maybe -- I can't remember any magic in those. Also, if you're willing to allow communication with the gods, then The Thief and the two that follow it by Megan Whalen Turner might fit your requirements.

... it a nice, round five, but I'll wait until the end of the year to pick a final title. Right now I think it'll be either Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner or The Fall of the Kings by Ellen Kushner and Delia Sherman, but there's still almost a month left. Something might come along ...

... Sigh. On the upside, though, I went to their flagship store today in search of it and ended up coming away with a copy of Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. I read and loved it last weekend, and I'm very glad to have found a personal copy so quickly. Usually it's hell, tracking down the books ...

I agree on the Swordspoint and the sequel The Fall Of the Kings by Ellen Kushner. I would also recommend God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek. Lovely fantasy with a sweet m/m romance. Lord John and the Private Matter is only tenuously related to fantasy by way of the timetraveling Outlande ...

... Kushner and Delia Sherman at my favourite used bookstore this afternoon. I'm really looking forward to reading it; Swordspoint was my favourite book of July, and I'm eager to once again wallow in Ms. Sherman's gorgeous style. I also found a copy of Fool's Fate by Robin Hobb ...

I finished Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner a little earlier this afternoon; it affected me so much that I'm not sure I'm ready to dive into anything serious just yet. I think I'll read The Cradle Robbers by Ayelet Waldman next, as it looks to be a fairly quick, uninvolved mystery.

It's such a cliche, I know, but it's got to be Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. However, Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint, which I'm just finishing up right now, will probably rank pretty highly too. ETA: yup. Swordspoint is quite firmly tied with Harry.

I'm almost finish with Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. I was a little leery of it at first as I'd heard very mixed reviews, but I'm loving it. I want a personal copy, (this one is from the library), and as long as the ending holds up I'll definitely be checking out more of Ms. Kushner's work.

... Nights of Snowfall, (excellent stuff; I like this series more and more with each new volume), and this morning I started Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner. I'd heard mixed reviews of it, but so far I really like it. Her style works for me.

#204 - Swordspoint is amazing. I hope you enjoy it. Next for me is Brightly Burning by Mercedes Lackey, and either Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince or Sense and Sensibility.

... resist. Over the next little bit, I want to get to: Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay Blood Price by Tanya Huff Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner An Earthly Knight by Janet McNaughton The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud The Cradle Robbers by Ayelet Waldman ...

... et al - library 142. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander (aka J.K. Rowling) - keeper 143. Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner - library, unfortunately; personal copy later purchased 144. The Cradle Robbers by Ayelet Waldman - loaner

Of course, Melusine and the sequels, and the Nightrunner series are way up there with my favorites. And, of course, Swordspoint must be added to that list.

Fog-struck in Teen Readers : Introductions (May 18, 2007, 2:52am)

... Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Little, Big, The Mists of Avalon, and Swordspoint.

rarm in Teen Readers : Introductions (Jan 5, 2007, 5:04pm)

I'm 15. Favorite books? Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Swordspoint, Harry Potter (of course), American Gods, Twilight,The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime, among other things...I'm an aspiring author, too. Nice to meet y'all.

A duplicate post which I have removed. Not sure if it was my system on LT gremlins.

... wonderful books set in a medieval university town which has the underclass and the nobility striving and scuffling. Swordspoint, The Fall of the Kings, the Privilege of the Sword

... God Eaters by Jesse Hajicek. A fantasy adventure with a m/m romance. Very good. Almost as good as Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint and The Fall of the Kings.

amberwitch in SlashThing : Recs (Oct 5, 2006, 8:35am)

In the fantasy genre I have a few: Ellen Kushner: Swordspoint (m/m), The fall of the Kings (mainly m/m) Jesse Hajicek: The God Eaters (m/m. Selfpublished, which is probably responsible for the not so good paperquality and page layout, but well edited and well written) I would ...

Aarti, Swordspoint to me felt like historical novel rather than fantasy. I don't know what it is that made it so but I couldn't point to it when I finished reading and say it was fantasy. I really will have to get the lies of Locke Lamora and book 2 of Naomi Novik's series. I too was ...

I also liked Swordspoint quite a bit. I haven't read anything else by Kushner, though. I am currently enjoying The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. I have been struggling with The Darkness that Comes Before by Bakker for a while but can't seem to really get into it.

I finished Swordspoint and The Language of the Night, but I'm still working on A Hero of Our Own: The Story of Varian Fry. I've just started Jasper Fforde's The Big Over Easy, as well as A Member of the Family: Gay Men Write About Their Families, edited by John Preston. And I ...

Well I loved Swordspoint and liked the next 2 books less: The Fall of the Kings and the most recent which I just read a few weeks ago: The Privilege of the Sword. I am mad for Alec and Richard and after swordspoint they are scarce. I have read Little, Big and all I will say is tedious ...

Deirdre, just wanted to let you know that I was disappointed with Swordspoint as well- just like you said, there was hardly any fantasy in it at all. And I didn't "get" the story, either.
