I read this when I was in my 20's -- need to read it again sometime. I remember it being good.

Man comes up after the lecture for advice: "I'm nowhere and I want to get somewhere". [122]

The subject of "transition" for a book, peculiarly for Americans.

Imagine allowing being "lost enough to find yourself" (Frost)? Is there really a choice? Given that nothing endures but change, it can only be useful to be more conscious of and skillful in recognizing and being with change. Beginnings, middles, and ends layered on top of each other (aka bardos). Easy to forget that the process of disintegration and reintegration is the source of renewal. Useful references to Odysseus, Oedipus, Psyche. (I appreciate all the more Norman Fisher's book - Sailing Home.) ( )

Epigraph
The nine cities of Troy, each built on the ruins of its predecessor, were accumulated over millennia, from the Stone Age till Roman times.  Pompeii was buried by volcanic eruption...The Old World thus had its ghost towns, but more often than not they were buried and men built on the rubble of their ancestors' disappointed hopes.  In America the archaeology of fast-moving men on a nearly empty continent was spread plain and thin on the surface.  Its peculiar product was the abandoned place (the "ghost town") rather than the the buried place. Its characteristic relics were things left by choice before they were used up. - Daniel J Boorstin, The Americans: The National Experience

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0201000822, Paperback)

Whether switching jobs or moving house, leaving school or retiring, change brings both opportunities and turmoil. Most of us struggle through such periods. This classic book shows how making a successful transition lets you recognize and seize new opportunities.Transitions has helped hundreds of thousands of readers to cope with changes by providing a road map of the transition process. With the understanding born of experience, William Bridges takes us step by step through the three stages of transition:Endings. Recognize endings as opportunities as well as losses, and even celebrate them with rituals designed to open new doors. The Neutral Zone. In this seemingly unproductive “time-out,” we feel disconnected from the past and emotionally unconnected to the present. The most frightening stage of transition, the Neutral Zone is really an important time for reorientation. The New Beginning. A successful transition requires more than persevering: it means launching new priorities. Understand the external and internal signs that point the way to your future.
