When a robbery occurs at the Checkertown Library, Becky is the prime suspect. The afternoon before the library’s book sale, Becky had offered to buy the copy of The Wizard of Oz. Now it and four other books from the sale are missing. Becky and Toby discover that most of the other children's books being sold had been owned by Gertrude Tobias. More specifically, they learn that the five stolen books were Miss Cynthia McPhearson's inheritance from her aunt, Miss Tobias. Cynthia was deeply disappointed that she didn’t inherit any of Miss Tobias’ wealth so she donated the books to the library. Mrs. Brattle, the librarian, tells Becky and Toby that she had set the five stolen books aside for a collector's appraisal; the collector believed that the books might be worth several thousand dollars. When Becky and Toby look at Miss Tobias’ other books in the sale, they find that all of them have maps. They are convinced that someone is using the maps to find Miss Tobias' treasure.

Becky's furious! The Checkertown librarian has accused her of stealing a rare children's book, and she's determined to prove her innocence by tracking down the real culprit. She and her twin brother Toby discover that clues to the mysterious missing books can be found in the stories themselves.

Some books are mising from the town library. Becky is a usspect in the robbert. She and her twin brother act as detectives to clear her name. Where these books actulally clues to a lost treasure? This is a short plot driven story with a very heavy handed message about the joy of reading and "treasures" found in books. ( )

A great early chapter book to get the young reader engaged in reading. The pace of the book keeps moving and there are many opportunities to stop and discuss the events. ( )
