Ah, so she probably places Witch Week ahead in time of The Magicians of Caprona - interesting.
I think I probably agree with DWJ in reading Charmed Life ahead of all the other Chrestomanci stories, even if The Lives of Christopher Chant is about the young Chrestomanci - being the first ... ... of Christopher Chant is chronologically before Conrad's Fate, then Charmed Life, then, The Magicians of Caprona, Witch Week and The Pinhoe Egg (which can't be pinned down in the timeline particularly, but were written in that order). That said, I read them as they were published (C ... ... Magics
The Spellcoats
I have a few incomplete series here so I ordered from ILL (though they haven't come in yet):
Witch Week
Stealer of Souls
Conrad's Fate
Mixed Magics
The Pinhoe Egg
The Drowned Ammet
Cart and Cwidder
Crown of Dalemark
I think the librarians ... ... favourite is easily Fire and Hemlock, but I also spent all of high school rereading The Lives of Christopher Chant (and Witch Week), so I'm rather attached to both of them. And I've just recently discovered Howl's Moving Castle and absolutely love it. And then I feel I should mention Year ... Witch Week by Diana Wynne Jones ... – Diana Wynne Jones
3. Conrad's Fate – Diana Wynne Jones
4. The Magicians of Caprona – Diana Wynne Jones
5. Witch Week – Diana Wynne Jones
6. The Pinhoe Egg – Diana Wynne Jones
7. Mixed Magics – Diana Wynne Jones
8. Persuasion – Jane Austen
9. The Age of Innocen ... I have read Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant, and Witch Week. I liked them all a lot! Now I must decide what to read next. I have too many interesting books at the moment! ;) I suppose I should start with the library books... Witch Week by Diana Wynne Jones ... People were reading some of the Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones, which reminded me that I had accidentally taken Witch Week to school with the Ibbotson's. So I retrieved it Monday while at work, and of course did not get home without starting it. This is definitely one of Jones' ... Witch Week is one of my 14 year old's favorite books. We got it on audio and she thought it was extremely funny. The scenes where the kids are accusing one another of witchcraft were just great. Sandragon, expect a PM your way to answer that. ^-^
Witch Week is now officially finished. Liberation of the books I started! (And of course now I don't know what to read next. *sigh*) I finished The Cygnet and the Firebird last night. Now I have one of my bookmarks back. ^-~ Next up is/will be Witch Week before I delve into books I promised friends to read ages hence and never got to. With the books I've finished this past week or so I feel oddly liberated. People were reading some of the Chrestomanci books by Diana Wynne Jones, which reminded me that I had accidentally taken Witch Week to school with the Ibbotson's. So I retrieved it Monday while at work, and of course did not get home without starting it. This is definitely one of Jones' ... finished a book! LOL
book #30 Heksenweek by Diana Wynne Jones
translation of Witch Week
from the library, YA fantasy
Coninuing reading the Crestomanci books, this one was entertaining too and light enough to read now.
4 stars the first DWJ book I read was witch week as well:) The first DWJ book I read was Witch Week, and it was the only one that was read aloud to me. I obviously enjoyed it enough to read more :)
I completely agree about J. K. Rowling! I think it's precisely because no one read DWJ that they were so into Rowling--everyone thought the concept of ... ... nightingale floor by Lian Hearn (msg 48)
book #31 The Magicians of Caprona by Diana Wynne Jones (msg 34)
book #30 Witch Week by Diana Wynne Jones (msg 16) ... by Bruce Bawer
45. Fairest by Gail Carson Levine
46. Thirteenth Child by Patricia C. Wrede
47. Witch Week* by Diana Wynne Jones
48 Bloodhound by Tamora Pierce
49. Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney
50. The Bell at Sealey Head by Patricia McKillip ... Alternative start point for Terry Pratchett would be The Wee Free Men. Ibbotson books include Witch Week and Dial a Ghost. Have you tried Tamora Pierce? How about Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings? The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander? ... - two rival magical dynasties compete with each other, but have to pull together when the city comes under threat.
5) Witch Week - set in a world where magic is against the law, in a school containing many children of witches that were burnt at the stake.
6) The Pinhoe Egg
7) Mixed ... ... it's chronologically after 1 and 2, I'd be inclined to read it first.
4) The Magician's of Caprona
5) Witch Week
6) The Pinhoe Egg
7) Mixed Magics: this is short stories (4 I think) that vary chronologically.
The Dalemark Quartet
More fokelore-y than ... ... Hemlock is probably my favorite Diane Wynne Jones of all time... although the Chrestomanci books are all reat, especially Witch Week, and I love her Dalemark Quartet. She's a very prolific author, and I know there are books of hers that I still haven't read. I need to get on that! ... Magicians of Caprona as one of the best Chrestomanci books - but actually most of that particular series are fantastic (Witch Week, The Lives of Christopher Chant...) and really don't need to be read in order.
Re Howl's Moving Castle - this has always been one of my favourites. I ... It's not Witch Week by Diana Wynne Jones, is it? ... Books of the Dream Eaters
A Grammar of Spoken Chinese by Yuen Ren Chao
Luck in the Shadows
Spook's Battle
Witch Week
Parable of the Talents
The Man who Mistook His Wife for a Hat
Dawn
The Stinking Great Lie
Living Welsh
Say it in Yiddish
Many of these are ... I'm reading a lot of Diana Wynne Jones.
*Charmed Life
*Witch Week
*Howl's Moving Castle}
and when I've finished Howl,
*Castle in the Air 9. Witch Week, Diana Wynne Jones
This was suggested in a review as something Harry Potter fans might like, and it is somewhat similar to Harry Potter in that it takes place in a boarding school in England and is about adolescent witches. But this world is a much different place, where magic ... #30 - I really liked Dark Lord of Derkholm and its sequel, Year of the Griffin. But Witch Week is good, too! As I remember, it's set in the same world as the Chrestomanci books, but it's fine to read on its own. ... though, she's really clever and entertaining so I think I'll probably have to read some more of her stuff. I've been told Witch Week was a good one but let me know if you have a better suggestion. ... course, it wasn't the same, but the kids and magic and school all were there (well, school was mostly just in the one book Witch Week..).
So while I wouldn't say the Chrestomanci series is like Harry Potter, I would say Harry Potter is like the Chrestomanci series, which was written earlier. ... ... Chant is my favourite of her books! And actually one of my favourite books overall. I also think Charmed Life and Witch Week are really good, but I don't know whether I've even read Mixed Magics... (ack! Why can I almost never manage to read a discussion without adding more books to ... ... am new to Diana Wynne Jones and am now obsessed! I just read the Lives of Christopher Chant and Charmed Life, and have Witch Week, Mixed Magics and Howl's Moving Castle in the pile.
I have been trying to track down a copy of The Tough Guide to Fantasyland but it does not seem to be ... ... Chrestomanci series, because the time gaps in the story are so large and most are about different characters entirely... Witch Week and the Magicians of Caprona always seemed very separate to me, when I read them as a child I didn't even connect them as a series in my mind.
This will be ... ... books, I think there should be one exception to the chronological ordering: Conrad's Fate should be read after Witch Week, because it was written so much later and is so much worse. ... order, starting with The Lives of Christopher Chant. Plus, that's my favourite one! But the first one I read was Witch Week, so apparently that's an okay starting point too. Chrestomanci: The Lives of Christopher Chant, Conrad's Fate, Charmed Life, The Magicians of Caprona, Witch Week, The Pinhoe Egg is the series chronological order. (Real world publishing order is different; if you read Charmed Life first you'll experience a strange time-shift later in ... ... the original ones in that series are Charmed Life, The Lives of Christopher Chant, The Magicians of Caprona, and Witch Week...(I think that is the correct order to read them in, although they aren't so closely related that you can't read them out of order) ... She has continued on in ... ... ability. I think I was 8 when I first starting reading books by Diana Wynne Jones, and my mother read the beginning of Witch Week out loud to me but I was so engrossed in the story that I finished it on my own. ... Jones fan I initially responded to the first book in a different way than I might have done (feeling the similarities to Witch Week and Charmed Life rather keenly), but over time I've grown to like it more and more.
