Sailing to Sarantium ? -- if so, please turn it over to someone else; I wonʻt be at the keyboard for 10 or 12 hours.

calm in The Green Dragon : October 2009 Reads (Oct 11, 2009, 12:38pm)

This morning I finished the wonderful Sarantine Mosaic (Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay). I am now going to read The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor.

Finished the wonderful Sarantine Mosaic (Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay). After seeing a recommendation of this in a thread on LT (and it actually being in the library) I am now reading The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor.

31) Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay (start Oct 7 - finished Oct 9) (reviewed) Loved it! So much that I am going to read the second book straight away. I also need some time to ...

... or The forests of the heart. Most of what Guy Gavriel Kay writes - lmost notable in The Lions of Al-Rassan and The Sarantine Mosaic IMO.

I don't have to be asked twice. Thank you for the thought, Teazle! #1 by G.B. Stern ~ Mosaic, Shining and Free, and The Young Matriarch (O.K. I think these don't exist as Viragos. Does anybody know?) (Too lazy to look through the list right now) #2 ANYTHING by Winifred Holtby except< ...

I managed to get Sailing to Sarantium the first book of the Sarantine Mosaic for 40p. The nice volunteer in the charity shop went down to the stockroom to see if Lord of Emperors was there but unfortunately she couldn't find it.

... characters are terrorists and I couldn't deal with that. Loved Lions of al-Rassan, and thought the second book after Sailing to Sarantium , Lord of Emperors was much better. The first book was blah, but the second has a different POV and is much less limp. I forget what I posted ...

... Tigana a close second. I've read a couple more of Kaye's works but didn't find them nearly as compelling (Ysabel and Sailing to Sarantium), yet I'll continue to read more by him because al-Rassan and Tigana were so very good. Just finished The Cavalier of the Apocalypse by Susanne All ...

While wildly unhistorical (and besides, I don't read historical fiction) Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors (a duology) renewed my curiosity about Byzantium, just like The Lions of Al-Rassan fed my interest for the moorish period on the Iberian peninsula. The last I already knew quite ...

Whisper - Oh now that's a compliment. I won't evilly direct you to my LisaCurcio in Club Read 2009 : LisaCurcio's 2009 Reading (Mar 6, 2009, 5:18pm)

... I liked Tigana a great deal. Just discovered Kay last year, and have also read The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy, the Sailing to Sarantium duology and Ysabel. Thought they were all good, and would probably rate Tigana second to The Fionavar Tapestry books. Sometimes a book just ...

... heh). It's one of my most favourite, beloved books. If you like it, I also highly recommend The Lions of Al Rassan, The Sarantine Mosaic (a duology) and The Last Light of the Sun. A Song for Arbonne is good too, but not as good (in my opinion at least) as the others I listed... Can ...

... Fionavar Tapestry. Most of Kay's works don't have the "usual dwarves, elves and orc-like creatures"; they're more like Sailing to Sarantium. BTW, did you know that there's a sequel to the latter? Lord of Emperors It ties up the story nicely. Try Tigana if you're of a mind for some ...

... Although this story has mages, dwarves, elves and orc-like creatures, (unlike other Kay books I have read: Ysabel and Sailing to Sarantium) the depth and breadth of the story is great and develops the relationships in more interesting ways than other fantasy I have read.

... Takes some time to parse, very good book, IMHO. Or something by G G Kay, like Lions of Al-Rassan, or the Sarantine Mosaic. On another take - the Dresden-files books are fast reads that don't demand too much concentration, which sometimes can be good when having to keep an ...

... so few, but Guy Gavriel Kay writes beautifully historical fantasies. His take on the Byzantine empire in his duologi The Sarantine Mosaic is very wellwritten, and a beautifully rendered timepiece.

4. Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay Pretty decent but not one of GGK's best. I was surprised to find that a book with a Mosaist as the protagonist would actually not bore me. I like royal intrigue type material however, and this book and its sequel do not disappoint. 5. Lord ...

49. Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay. 7 stars. LT Really good fantasy, though nowhere as great as The Lions of al-Rassan, which is my favorite Kay so far, or Tigana, but it might have garnered 8 stars except that the ending was just so disappointing. I know this is the first of a ...

... first chapter are really interesting, and I think it's going to be a fascinating look at modern China. However, I borrowed Sailing to Sarantium from the library, and it's due back on Tuesday, so I may have to read that one first.

I don't mind multiple-part fantasy either, just make sure you've got easy access to Lord of Emperors once you finish Sailing to Sarantium, and don't expect much (if anything) to be wrapped up by the end of the first book. And no, my name came from long before Firefly the show, back ...

#49 The Lions of al-Rassan really is brilliant, isn't it!?! I'm looking forward to Sailing to Sarantium and hope for the best. I don't mind books that are continued in second and third parts, having cut my fantasy eyeteeth on LotR. I didn't know it was set in the same world as Lions, though. ...

>45 Storeetllr - Sailing to Sarantium is, in my opinion, not as good as Lions of Al-Rassan, mainly because it's the first half of a duology, so on its own it feels unfinished (I'm only partway through the second book, Lord of Emperors, at the moment, so I can't really comment on it yet, ...

... written more together. Any book by Guy Gavriel Kay is likely to be good. I have never found a bad one by him. I enjoyed Sailing to Sarantium as well as The Lions of al-Rassan.

... on the history of the Christians, Muslims, and Jews in medieval Spain. I just picked up (in lieu of Lackey's novel) Sailing to Sarantium by the same author which, the cover says, is a fantasy based on the Byzantine Empire. I'm hoping it's as good as The Lions of al-Rassan.

Oh, I've heard of Sailing to Sarantium. My first Kay was The Lions of al Rassan, which was brilliant and almost as much a favorite as Tigana is turning out to be. I guess I like 'em long, when they're as well done as Kay does them. :)

Lord of Emperors is the second half of The Sarantine Mosaic, his one duology. It's definitely best to start with Sailing to Sarantium; the two books are really more like one very long book in two volumes.

> 18 - The Last Light of the Sun is the one you couldn't remember. Sailing to Sarantium and the sequel, Lord of Emperors, are the two that are set in Byzantium. There's also The Lions of Al-Rassan which is loosely set in Spain during the time of religious complications between Christians, Mu ...

50. Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay - keeper This was my second time through this book, and I am SO GLAD I reread it right now. I enjoyed it even more than the first time. Armed with the knowledge of how everything turns out, I found myself blown straight out of the water by Ka ...

April, you might want to look at Guy Kay. His best works are historical sorta-fantasies: The Lions of al-Rassan, Sailing to Sarantium, Lord of Emperors, and Tigana, which has a stronger fantasy element.

Some suggestions: What's Bred in the Bone by Robertson Davies, about an art historian/restoration expert. Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay, about a mosaicist living in an alternate version of the Byzantine Empire. The Griffin & Sabine books by N ...

... Anybody up for two? If I were going to re-read something of his, it would be the Sarantine Mosaic, which consists of Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors. Crispin is an arrogant ding-a-ling, but I like almost everything else. Another possibility is Ysabel, which just came out ...

8. Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay. Always fun to read, this is the first of a series about a mosaicist in a Roman-like setting. Fun. 9. Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay. Second of series, the story of court intrigue in fictional Sarantium continues.

I too wonder how old a book have to be to count. My 5 cents is on The Lions of Al-Rassan, or the duo Sailing to Sarantium & Lord of Emperors. All same author as Tigana above. And I think that as fantasy goes the original three Earthsea novels is a must-read.

... of Robin Hobb that I figured I should give it another go. Hobb has since become one of my absolute favourite authors. Sailing to Sarantium by Guy Gavriel Kay. Lots of people on the Green Dragon kept mentioning Kay's work, so I figured I'd give him a go after I found this in a thrift ...

#50 Jim53 - I just discovered GGK and loved Sailing to Sarantium. I just picked up the Fionaver Tapestry books on Friday, and will be starting in tonight. Can't wait.

Oh, Sailing to Sarantium is good, but it's nothing without the sequel - Lord of Emperors. They really should have been ONE book, but maybe the publisher thought 800+ pages would be too much, or they thought they could make more money on two books than on one? Anyway, I hope you enjoy it (I ...

... waiting for the last (?) 400 (?) pages to be published in that format ;-) Also, I found the prologue and start to Sailing to Sarantium tedious, and had I not read Kay before I'd probably put it down. It too was worth the hard work.

Adventure and romance? And fantasy? I'd say almost anything by Guy Gavriel Kay. Top picks are Sailing to Sarantium + Lord of Emperors (equals The Sarantine Mosaic), Tigana, A Song for Arbonne and The Lions of Al-Rassan. He's wicked on character/emotional driven plots, plus is ...

#39 - I've only read three of his books thus far, (the first two Fionavar novels and Sailing to Sarantium), but it seems like he's still finding his stride in the earlier books. They're much more in the traditional fantasy vein, and they do a lot with archetypes and Celtic/Arthurian legends. I ...
