Apocalypse - Cape Breton Island, by Mike Senczyszak, was not at all what I expected. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much. I mean, we’re talking about Cape Breton as the basis of a post-apocalyptic novel! First of all kudos to Senczyszak for accuracy in describing the province I live in, with one, unbelievable glaring error. So glaring, it cost him a five star rating. I’m not going to say what it is here because I know most readers will see It right away. Sorry Mike, some things are unforgivable.

I do have another complaint. This is a great standalone story. It is well written, clearly well researched and as much as I despise the term, a page turner. However, there is clearly a sequel coming and let me assure you that once you reach the end of Apocalypse, you will HAVE to buy the sequel. I guess that’s probably the best recommendation I can give for Apocalypse.

Without giving away too much plot, let me say that we are introduced to a very interesting group of individuals, and soon get to know them well, liking some and hating others because the character development is exceptional. We never learn the real cause of the apocalypse, at least not yet, which is a good thing as the story to this point is about the people and their trials as they attempt to adjust and survive whatever it was that happened.

There really is not a lot more I can add without divulging too much of the story so let me say that if you are a fan of what happens after – whatever, you will love this book. If you happen to live in Nova Scotia, you’re going to be impressed with Mike’s knowledge, well, except for THAT. Just buy the book. You won’t regret it.
