This book made me smile she tells it like it is. ( )

This collection of Ms. Barr's thoughts and experiences about becoming religious are interesting because they explore spirituality from a different side than many get from within organized religion. Although her thoughts aren't 'outside' organized religion either. But they are her ways of making the orthodoxies of religion make sense to her personally - and we get the benefit too. I loved the section on girlfriends, and I liked the way Ms. Barr explores why 'being good' is good for us in essential ways that have little to do with keeping the rules or affecting some divine balance sheet. The kind of book you can 'dip' into and then think about. ( )

Barr recounts the history of her conversion to Christianity and why her church membership became important in her life. As the blurb says, this really is "the beguiling story of her journey from arrogance and atheism toward humility and a sense of being part of something greater than herself." Barr discusses her past frankly and unapologetically, admitting that somehow she was missing something important despite her successes as an actress and writer. She discusses her reflections and insights, giving advice only as far as her own experiences warrant. See p. 115 on how the "progress" of the 1970s destroyed her life and others, and precipitated the decline of Western Civilization. ( )

Seeking it, finding it, doubting it, questioning it, being skeptical about it, embracing it, etc. Down to earth and very thought-provoking.
