The Stone Circle is Book #11 in Elly Griffiths’ very dynamic Dr. Ruth Galloway Mystery series.
Dr. Ruth Galloway is a forensic archeologist living and working in the Norfolk area, Great Britain. She often liaisons with the police in matters of archeological interest.
In this particular title, a very dramatic plot and a new character (Erik’s son Leif) add to the suspense.
As always there is the Ruth/Nelson dynamic, the comradeship and work ethic of the Team, the location and its ancient history, Cathbad with his antics and wisdom and always the forensic archeology.
Another 5 Star ***** addition to one of my favorite series. ( )

Ruth finds modern bones when she is called to an archaeological site which draws Nelson into the investigation of a cold crime. A young girl disappeared from a street festival celebrating the marriage of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. Now in 2016 her bones have been discovered.

Nelson has also finally told his adult daughters about his daughter Kate with Ruth. And he is the father of new baby boy with his wife Michelle. Michelle meets Star in her mother and baby class and becomes friends with the young woman who is the unwed mother of Ava. It happens that the missing girl whose bones were discovered by Ruth was her aunt.

When Ava is kidnapped, Nelson and his people are in a high-pressure search to find the baby who is less than one month old while also investigating the cold crime.

This was another enjoyable episode in a long-running series. I really like the relationships between the many characters. I also like the archaeology.

Jane McDowell does an excellent job with the voices of all the characters. ( )

This Ruth Galloway series book is probably my least favorite of the run. It is a deliberate echo of the first novel, The Crossing Places, and it lacks the freshness and mystery of it. I don't mean to be crabby about this one, but it just didn't interest me like almost every other Elly Griffiths novel has. The story begins February 12, 2016. There are some background bits on the characters dropped in here, as there always are. I don't think I ever knew exactly how old Ruth Galloway was - approximately, yes, but if her year of birth was specifically mentioned in the early books I don't recall. Here though Ruth mentions she was 13 on July 31, 1981 the date of Charles and Diana's wedding. That would mean she was born probably in 1968, maybe late 1967. Later she says she is approaching 50 years of age, and then states she is 47.

This story covers my least favorite aspect of the Galloway mysteries, the discovery of a 12 year old girl buried in the saltmarsh in a new henge near the wooden henge that was the focal point of the first book. Henge stuff = good. Dead children = not good for me.

I don't think any regular reader of the series would want to skip this book. There are important developments to the story arcs.

The next book in the series, The Lantern Men, begins June 2018. ( )
