For a folktale, this one is pretty well told. The one caveat I have is that this was Caldecott Award winner, so I feel remiss not mentioning the illustrations, which were very nice. I might give them four or five stars, but the story was kind of bare-bones for my tastes. The repetition was good. The structure was right, but I just wasn't enthralled while reading. Good book. Not quite great though. ( )

The vivid colors and detailed illustrations will surely keep audiences entranced as they follow the fly. The story takes place in West Africa in the jungle and both would make for good teaching points.

I love to read this book to my kids. I like to tell them nothing and see who understands the ending of the book. I generally have some that get it and some that are confused. I like to pair them up and have the ones that understand explain to the others.

This was one of my favorite stories when I was growing up. I loved the bright pictures and the repetition in the story's pages. Re-reading this book as an adult is pretty entertaining, too, because I have a much different understanding of the story than when I first read it. ( )

Quotations
Is everyone still mad at me?
Mosquito told me such a big lie, I couldn't bear to listen to it. So I put sticks in my ears.
I'd rather be deaf than listen to such nonsense!
It was the mosquito's fault
The mosquito said, "I saw a farmer digging yams that were almost as big as I am."
"What's a mosquito compared to a yam?" snapped the iguana grumpily.

Book description
This West African pourquoi tale explains why mosquitoes buzz in people's ears. It all starts with Mosquito telling a lie to Iguana. Tired of listening to Mosquito, Iguana puts twigs in his own ears. When Python tries to talk to Iguana and Iguana doesn't respond to him, it sets off a chain of events that leads to the sun not rising in the morning. King Lion must learn the story of the events leading back to Mosquito's lie in order to get Mother Owl to call the sun. The story is enhanced by beautiful Caldecott winning illustrations.
