Deze in 1966 postuum gepubliceerde roman van Bataille (1897-1962) weerspiegelt de essentie van zijn obsessies: God, Liefde en de Dood. Op zich niet uitzonderlijk, maar wel karakteristiek in zijn uitwerking. De werkelijke mens onthult zich in extreme situaties. De ik in dit verhaal, Pierre, ontwaart na de dood van zijn brute, drankzuchtige vader een moeder, Hélène, die er alleen op uit schijnt te zijn haar zoon tot diepste verdorvenheid te leiden en daartoe orgieën organiseert, waarin de zoon inderdaad al snel zijn oorspronkelijke grenzen verre overschrijdt, burgerlijke conventies inwisselend voor extatisch zingenot. De pieken en dalen in de beleving van Pierre vinden een passende weergave in de expressionistische, explosieve stijl, die Bataille pleegt te hanteren.
