I've now started Anthony Powell's A Question of Upbringing, the the first book in his 12-volume A Dance to the Music of Time series.
Normal service - i.e., sf reading - will resume later... ... male-centred, and it takes a while for any important female characters to appear. If you start and find you don't like A question of upbringing - basically a school story that doesn't do all that much besides introducing the characters - try skipping ahead to A buyer's market, which is ... ... picked up the Raj Quartet by Paul Scott and the first book of Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time: A Question of Upbringing.
