Oliver Twist Charles Dickens ... Maybe that makes a difference. I always picture it looking like a grubby version of where Mr. Brownlow lives in the musical Oliver!
Bill Sykes from Oliver Twist! It's been a long time since I read it and I could be thinking of the film with Oliver Reed in it, but doesn't he shoot a dog? I know he shoots Bullseye in the film but does he shoot him in the book? Definetely a meanest character candidate. ... be worth visiting. An obvious one is the Dickens House Museum in Bloomsbury, where he lived in the late 1830s and wrote Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickelby.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ... I finished The Red and the Black, which was not what I was expecting, but was still an OK book. Yesterday I started Oliver Twist (another book from the Banned Books list), and I'm really excited about it, since I've never read it before. This weekend I finished The Red and the Black, and now I'm ready to start Oliver Twist. I'm also still working through a collection of Emerson's Essays, Faith of the Fallen, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. ... as to which to read next - I don't think I want to read the obvious ones (Great Expectations, David Copperfield, or Oliver Twist) just yet as I know what happens and the (very old) film of The Tale of Two Cities had me in such floods of tears (for the 'tis a far, far better thing that I ... 39.Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens ... regional variations. 2. Hollywood - Charles Bukowski
3. The Road - Cormac McCarthy
4. Ralph Nader : Battling for Democracy - Kevin Graham
5. 2001: A ... ... on-line. So now I'm also reading A Christmas Carol. I'm definitely not a fan of the Dickens books I've read (Oliver Twist and Hard Times), but so far, this one's okay. And short! ^^ I have to echo the A Tale of Two Cities rec, and also one for Oliver Twist, which is my favorite Dickens.
As for changing tastes, when I was in high school, I read a lot of VC Andrews, until I read Pride and Prejudice my senior year of high school. Since then I've mostly been interested ... ... can't finish it. (transl: the library's shut today and I've exhausted everything else to hand).
Years ago I gave up on Oliver Twist, The Pickwick Papers, Scenes from provincial life and Midnight's Children. I am not going back to those, no matter how bad winter gets. I read Oliver Twist right after Bleak House at the end of last year. It was nowhere near as enjoyable. In fact, I found it to be one of CD's more dark and depressing works, and very light-on for humour. Still a worthy book but not his best, in my opinion. ... Nickleby I got for free, so I haven't invested anything in it yet. I'll put it second on the list. I see no one suggested Oliver Twist. Poor Oliver. :-) Oliver Twist it is!
So dreamlikecheese is the officical winner, right? Thorold and aviddiva both guessed it but neither said it outright.
Oh and I've never seen the musical either, well except the Disney one with the dogs. ... one. Recommendations? Two caveats: I'd prefer something shorter than Bleak House, and I already own Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby and The Tale of Two Cities. Which one of these would be a good follow up to Bleak House? Oliver Twist? I just finished Oliver Twist this afternoon and next I plan to read Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman next. I'm currently reading Oliver Twist. I recently took my copy of Oliver Twist with me to a doctor's appointment. No-one in the waiting room seemed to mind. I don't know the name of the actor who played him but he managed to be hateful, frightening and pitiful all at the same time. That adaptation is worth watching just to see him. ... is a good way to describe it.
Dickens discussion: The only Dickens book I have been able to read more than once is Oliver Twist. It might not even count as a novel since he wrote it as a newspaper serial. I also had to read Great Expectations in high school (I only remember the Havisha ... 6. Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.

My class started with Frankenstein and Oliver Twist, and we've still to read Adam Bede by George Eliot, Tess of the D'Urbevilles by Thomas Hardy, She by H. I also finished Found on the Street by Patricia Highsmith. I'm very very slowly reading Oliver Twist and expect to be doing that for awhile. Finally, I am reading the non-fiction book Pulitzer Prize winner Legacy of Ashes. >82 Ooops, I must have overlooked mentioning the Dickens group before. Apologies!

Right then, back to the more serious stuff. The ones I'm slogging through remain sitting on my shelf, I'm enjoying Oliver Twist so that's probably the next one to be finished. I'm reading Oliver Twist by Dickens and Guy Mannering by Walter Scott for classes. I like Dickens in general, but OT is definitely not his best. Scott, I'm still making up my mind about (this is the second of his books I've read, the first being The Bride of Lammermoor.) ... these books are insightful and well-written but the current overdose is surely a symptom of cultural narcissism. Look, I'm Oliver Twist, too!
"Me" is supposedly a more "authentic" subject and source of truth. ... going to go in this first post:
January - A Short History of Nearly Everything. So wide-eyed and funny.

I agree with philosojerk about not starting Dickens with Bleak House. A Tale of Two Cities or Oliver Twist would probably be better to begin. The Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist has always been one of my favorites. ... has been shown on tv in the UK - it had an odd start but is promising.
If you like costume dramas then there was a new Oliver Twist on the BBC over Xmas, and ITV made The Old Curiosity Shop.

Dickens-I once spent months reading all the novels in order, and I gotta say, I loathe (gosh I wish we could do italics) Oliver Twist. What a little non-entity! Oh, don't get me started. Like others I find this a difficult question to answer. Oliver Twist was the first Dickens novel I read, so it has a special place for me. To answer fairly, I would have to lock myself away in a cabin somewhere for weeks and read them all ... I can appreciate that Oliver Twist was a product of its times, but I still loathe it with every fibre of my being.
As far as simple poor writing goes, I think The Stud by Jackie Collins would have to be near the top. I normally enjoy her books in a fun, trashy sort of way, but that one ... Surprises, like misfortunes, seldom come alone.
