Drury (The History of Modern Magic), a lecturer and workshop leader, is clearly grounded in the historical and scientific roots of magic. He easily references the kabbalah, quantum physics, Sanskrit text, and goddess spirituality. Still, Drury's narration is best when he's in workshop mode--teaching the nuts and bolts of visualizations, affirmations, spells, and how to create a sacred space. Fortunately, most of the book is packed with this kind of strong, meaty advice. He also includes a comprehensive bibliography and index. --Gail Hudson
