None. This series is new to me. I discovered it because of the PBS shows that are currently being broadcast in my area. I like the setting in Australia, and the characters. Lots of delicious descriptions of Ms Fisher's wardrobe. It seems there are many titles in the series. A fun read. Light, enjoyable style with an interesting heroine. Audio version is stellar - spare prose elegantly read by Stephanie Daniels. transferring reading records from spreadsheet Phryne Fisher is exactly who I would choose to be if I could. Witty, elegant, rich, and a "born adventuress"--with perfect hair and clothes right out of an Erte illustration. Oh, and a Russian dancer for a paramour. She is almost too perfect, except that she isn't--she's just perfectly perfect. The mystery here doesn't matter and is pretty obvious--I NEVER figure out whodunit, and even I caught on about halfway through. Still, who cares, because Phryne is FABULOUS. Did I mention I want to be her when I grow up? no reviews | add a review Is contained in

As you can tell, I didn't get along with this. I'm not sure what the prose was aiming for, but it was unbearable for me. It's littered with, well, adverbs. Clumsy inquits. I think there's an attempt at period prose, but if you've read Golden Age crime fiction like that of Sayers, it just looks bad.
The good points are that the main female character has full agency, even regarding her sexual habits and everything else: it's unusual, I think, for people to consider the flappers as feminist figures with agency and guts instead of silly and giggly and goodness knows what else.
Obviously, based on the positive reviews I can see, my dislike of this is a personal allergic reaction brought on by adverbs. (
