"A rediscovered classic from the author of For Two Thousand Years, this remarkable debut novel presents nuanced snapshots of love in the early twentieth century. Stefan Valeriu, a young man from Romania who has just completed his medical studies in Paris, spends his vacation in the Alps, where he quickly becomes entangled with three different women. We follow Stefan after his return to Paris as he reflects on the women in his life, at times playing the lover, and at others observing shrewdly from the periphery. Women's four interlinked stories offer moving portraits of romantic relationships in all their complexity, from unrequited loves and passionate affairs to tepid marriages of convenience. In the same strikingly eloquent style that would characterize his later, more political writings, Mihail Sebastian explores profound feelings of longing, otherness, empathy, and regret"--… (more)

Stephan Valeriu is a young Romanian, and this is a collection of short stories about the women he loved. First, there’s the story of Renée, Martine and Odette from his stay on the picturesque lake. Then, there is the story of Emilie, a sad and unlikely love story of a woman who he never thought would fall in love. Then, there is the story of Maria, creatively told solely through a letter from Maria to Stephan. And last there is the story of Arabela, the woman he met while visiting the circus. Each story is unique, yet all are linked, because each story belongs to Stephan at different stages of his life. Each is a story of turn-of-the twentieth century love and relationships between men and women.

This book is a reprint from the original Romanian printing in 1933. I did not care for it. It was trite and uninteresting.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. ( )

Het is nog geen acht uur. Stefan Valeriu leidt dat af uit de zonnestralen die amper de onderkant van chaise longue raken.
