And apparently, it was so amazing that I utterly forgot about it, until I'd gotten about 70 pages in and realized that I'd definitely read this one before. So throughout, I knew the characters already, and possibly what they would do next, but I didn't remember it clearly enough to know the big, dramatic conclusion, so I had to go on to the very end. So, it was an enjoyable read, but I'd have trouble recommending a book that apparently so lacks all defining characteristics that in two years, you'll have forgotten everything about it. Still, if you're stuck on a plane, or in the doctor's office...Elizabeth George can be a really great writer, and she isn't bad in this one. But I don't think it's her best, too scattered and unfocused. Still, it would introduce you to her characters, if you've never read her. I had to tolerate her whingeing about not being able to have a child, and now I'm expected to tolerate her whingeing about her career? Um. No. I won't do it. She needs to suck it up and move on, and as Milli Vanilli said (or didn't)back in the day, "Blame it on the rain." That's why they didn't show. That's why, Deborah, that's why. If I were Simon I'd be tempted to beat her with my cane just to shut her up. Big whiner. Damn. Shut up already. I refuse to read this book further because I loathe one of the characters so. I want to call this particular title "The Flip Side of THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL SOCIETY" (which book i have NOT read)...since it is set on the Isle of Guernsey and, in part, deals with the Nazi Occupation of said island.....not a quaint story in this case..
a thoroughly enjoyable read...but i am a serious GEORGE fan
