... was it his experiences during the holocaust that made him so? Next up is Noah's Compass. I'm still listening to Brideshead Revisited and am a great deal less enamored than I was with the movie. Turns out that Evelyn Waugh was quite the misogynist. Who knew?

... I am thinking of buying their versions of Collins' Moonstone and The Woman in White. The only one I currently own is Brideshead Revisited. The production quality seems good, though the small size is somewhat detracting.

53. Brideshead Revisted Forgot to put this one down! Enjoyed it, but frustrating finish.

... like it when I read it, but it's hard to force myself to get into it because the writing is so choppy. Still listening to Brideshead Revisited, Jeremy Irons is the reader, dreamy voice, but obviously a well loved book because the Cd's are pretty worn.

I really liked Jeremy Irons' narration for Brideshead Revisited, and Anna Massey's Rebecca. I haven't had much exposure to celebrity reads otherwise.

... and Works by Evelyn Waugh This is an interesting journey by the author of many well-known books, including Brideshead Revisited and Decline and Fall. Written in 1927, when he was only 24, this was Waugh's first publication. Blasted for their non-traditional form of art, ...

I finally finished listening to The Secret Diaries of Charlotte Bronte and have started on Brideshead Revisited. For some reason I always thought Brideshead Revisited was Brigadoon, so never wanted to read it, why would you read a musical? Then I read something by a man who said his life ...

... There are some classics I'm adamant about reading this year (The Brothers Karamazov, The Handmaid's Tale, Nausea, Brideshead Revisited, etc.), but, for the most part, I just blow through Barnes & Noble, selecting books at random. :)

... I've counted it right. It includes four books that would be in my all time top ten: The Wasp Factory Cloud Atlas Brideshead Revisited Wuthering Heights

Nearing the end of Brideshead Revisited, enjoying it, but am wondering if it will taper off now. Up next, an Asian read, I feel the need for something different.

Oh - Brideshead Revisited - a favourite book and a memorable TV serial - loved it and the title music was so very apt!!

A Handful of Dust was not nearly as thrilling for me as Vile Bodies or Brideshead Revisited. i love love love Evelyn Waugh's dark humor, but i just didin't feel it in this book. and it didn't have the weight of Brideshead to make up for that lack of humor. of course, there were some funny ...

3. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh This book is supposedly about the workings of divine Grace and about the superiority of Catholic faith over agnosticism, while another central theme is traditional English nobility and the decline of their age, which is viewed as very sad. If it was ...

7. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh It's always a little worrying when reviews on a book cover proclaim it to be "genius" and "finest work", because then I'll feel I must be stupid if I don't like it. Luckily, I liked it quite a bit. I wasn't sure at first, to be honest, but once the part in ...

... marches and maneuvers and gambling and golden sunsets, is about to be completely destroyed. Like another favorite of mine, Brideshead Revisited, it makes me homesick for a place and time I've never been. Five stars. Everyone should read it.

#177 No, I rather like Brideshead. It was Officers and Gentlemen that turned me off. Have we earned a clue yet?

... unlikeable in many ways. I had similar reactions to Scoop and Black Mischief as others here, and I have yet to read Brideshead Revisited. I do think that Waugh is interesting to read in light of other colonial and post-colonial literature. Putting it in the context of Heart of Darkness ...

... Black Mischief, which is also a satire, but of colonial governments. The racial slurs are really startling. I loved Brideshead Revisited, but to me, it is very different from Waugh's war-related books.

... war category Evelyn Waugh was one of those authors that I had somehow considered difficult for some reason. I mean, Brideshead Revisited and all that. But the description of this wicked little story sounded so tempting that I had to give it a try. I will definitely be reading more. Sc ...

... Bodies on their TBR piles - bump it up! It's probably my favourite Evelyn Waugh novel (well, maybe jointly with Brideshead Revisited). Scoop is also extremely funny as is The Loved One... Oh and The Sword of Honour Trilogy too... I do find that reading too many books by him ...

#65 & 67 - thanks. I'm definitely reading more of Evelyn Waugh. Up to now I had only read Brideshead Revisited which I really liked, but these satires of his are hilarious. Scoop and Vile Bodies are now on my wishlist and it looks like I'll have to add Black Mischief too.

Jeremy Irons reading Brideshead Revisited was amazing. Perfect in every way. I haven't seen it, but I understand he played in the older miniseries. Also, Ann Massey did a fantastic job reading Rebecca. She also played in an older production of it, as Mrs. Danvers, I think. Her reading is ...

Mmmm! I'm going to have to add Brideshead Revisited to my Netflix cue.

BJ, have you ever seen any of the miniseries of Brideshead Revisited? I think it was originally for PBS or BBC in the 1980s, and it stars a young Jeremy Irons. My mom LOVES this book (as do I) and now has the miniseries on DVD. It's something like 12 hours long, but I think it's worth it just ...

Well, I haven't started The Count of Monte Cristo yet, but I did read Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh, which has been on my tbr for 20 years. I don't know why I took so long to read it, because it was a good book. One more book to go for 2009. --BJ

I finished the last book in my 1001 Category, Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. This book has been on my tbr for 20 years, so I am really glad that I have read it at last. Now I only have one more book to read from the Book to Screen category, and I have it picked out. I hope to finish it ...

80. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. This book has been on my tbr for about 20 years. I finally decided to read it. At first, I did not feel totally immersed in it, but the more I read, the more I liked it. Parts were humorous, other parts were sad. I can see why it made the 1001 list. ...

Hi Schmerguls: When I said the past is rare in a title, I didn't mean past participles (a titleparallel to Brideshead Revisited) are rare -- only that a main verb in the past is rare. One that I listed B.Wolfe's The Great Prince Died had its title changed, in its second editiion to Tr ...

191: I've read a fair share of reviews for Brideshead, so I'm curious what the actual book is like. Decline and Fall was Waugh's first published novel and it is light and juvenile with some sharp barbs about secularism and modernism. I've also heard some call "Brideshead" schmaltz, at least ...

Love, love, love Brideshead Revisited. It is different from his other more satiric works, but there's still plenty of humor and a really unforgettable set of characters.

Once I'm done with my Warhammer 40K candy, I'm going to hack into Brideshead Revisited by Waugh. See how it stacks up against Decline and Fall and A Handful of Dust

Brideshead Revisited - what can I say? Just inspiring me to go and read lots more Waugh. I really enjoyed this - I relate far more to Ryder re Catholicism (I'm sure I spelt that wrong) though his final prayer and the attached implications are to me the marring note of the novel.

#21 Brideshead Revisited - love it! Agreeing with Ryder re catholicism though.

#93, Kell_Smurthwaite: Personally, I was disappointed in Brideshead Revisited. Just a good book, not a great one. I actually liked the Masterpiece Theater treatment better. There are two outstanding books I know of on Oxford. One fiction, Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers and ...

HoldenCarver: why do you think that On Beauty is a re-write of Brideshead Revisited?

HoldenCarver in The Prizes : The Orange (Nov 8, 2006, 6:35pm)

I have a big problem with Zadie Smith's On Beauty; namely that it is little more than a re-writing of Brideshead Revisited, and not a very good one at that. To echo Trapnel, I felt that The Accidental was by far a better book, and while I can't judge on accessiblity, I'd say it ...

Two of my all-time favourite slashy novels are Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh and The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Both m/m. I feel as though the whole world knows Brideshead already, especially after the excellent and very faithful miniseries, but for those who don't: Int ...

If you look at Waugh, the more he questions modernity the less impressive his novels become. Brideshead Revisited, for example, is a novel of rampant snobbery and sentimentality, a look back to the good old days when everyone knew their place. The best novels are those, like A Handful of Dust, ...
