I'm not sure but I think I may be the only person here who didn't read The Professor and the Madman for this category. This was a fun book, very suited for reading in short increments as I did. I'm reading John Adams by David McCullough. It's wonderful, but slow going. Here are a couple more for 423 (I personally thought the Professor and the Madman was rather a snore, but it definitely beats reading a dictionary!): the Disheveled Dictionary by Karen Elizabeth Gordon, which is short and very entertaining, and Bill Bryson's Troublesome Words, which isn't as ... I thought the descriptions of the process gone through to compile the OED very interesting. Sorry to hear that you did not care so much for The Professor and the Madman. 6. Ex Lib ... So many interesting choices... I have not read any of these, but my husband thought The Professor and the Madman was only so-so. If I were going to pick for myself, the ones calling me would be The Mummy congress and Leaving Mother Lake, so I'll nudge those. I will nudge The Professor and the Madman because I enjoyed it, and Gertrude Bell: Queen of the Desert, Shaper of Nations because it is a book I would like to read (and it sits somewhere in the house, in one of the TBR piles of my dear SO). ... that David McCullough is a good writer but I am not a huge US history fan, so it still sits on my TBR pile.
I enjoyed The Professor and the Madman, and remember thinking he was a good writer; not earth shattering but worthwhile. The War: a memoir by Duras looks intriguing.
Two ... I agree with staffordcastle on The Professor and the Madman. It was a good read, and I am not regretting to have spend my time on it, but some of the other books look at least as promising. I read The Professor and the Madman too; while I didn't find it tedious, it was not a real exciting read. But I'm interested in words and dictionaries and the Victorian age and that sort of stuff. And I found The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester at the used bookstore too, in excellent condition, very cheap. I've listened to the audio, but I want to read it too - it' ... 7. overrated: The Da Vinci Code. Incredibly (to me!), also used more than once to tag Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Professor and the Madman.
8. love: Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife has a wide lead, which surprised me.
9. marriage (fiction): Pride and Prejudi ... I highly recommend The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester. It is about the writing of the OED and I found it absolutely fascinating. He wrote another one, called The Meaning of Everything also about the OED. I haven't read that one. Anyone find books written about the author(s) and construction of dictionaries such as The Oxford English Dictionary and Johnson's Dictionary? ... Press, India, and with Aultbea Publishers, U.K. Their epic fantasy novel Conspiracy of Calaspia forms the first in the Insanity series and is due to be published on 21st November 2006.

With all due respect, JPB, it's my impression that Jacobs' The Know-It-All, The Professor and the Madman, and Guns, Germs and Steel are all ostensibly non-fiction the last time I checked, and pretty good ones too.
