#100: I thought The Book Thief was substantially better than I Am the Messenger. So Bob (32), you're the local Young Adult expert it seems. I read Zusak's I am The Messenger and really enjoyed it. Is The Book Thief as good and worth reading?

#188: Profiler, I think I will read I am the Messenger at some point; the consensus is that it is not quite as good, although some people, including Stasia I think, liked it more than The Book Thief. I hope you like I Am the Messenger as much as I did, AMQS. I'm hoping to meet my goal - but life seems to get in the way of reading lately, which is good and bad. :) ... reading it now and he really is a slow reader but he can't put it down either.

Terry, I recently finished I Am The Messenger. I didn't like it as much as The Book Thief but then again, I think few books can compare to the power of The Book Thief
Bury My Heart at Wounded ... 56. I Am The Messenger by Marcus Zusak. Ed Kennedy's an ordinary guy who is suddenly chosen to make a difference in people's lives. I loved seeing the transition in him as he deciphered the messages and fulfilled them. A totally unbelievable fantasy, but one I really wanted to believe in, ... ... as some people are, looking at the blurbs and reviews. A good book for sure, not as emotional as I was expecting.

I read I am The Messenger right after first reading The book Thief, big mistake. I expected another book thief and to be honest I don’t think I will ever find another book remotely like it. That book is singularly and uniquely its own.

Please do NOT stop recommending books! e gads! I'm enthralled by the Sunday lists you post. I think I am the Messenger simply could not compare to The Book Thief.
And, Rachael is spot on with her comment that there are many more books you recommended that we love! ... and thus had so looked forward to another wonderful tale by the same author.
I think I'm in the minority regarding I am the Messenger because a lot of people really did like it. I am the Messenger - 2.5 stars!

If so, I think it's a great idea, as it makes your feelings about it clearer to us :) Linda, sorry you didn't enjoy I am the Messenger very much. I am looking forward to reading The Book Thief when I can get my hands on it and I will be interested to see if I find this one as powerful as you did. I Am The Messenger sounds a little disappointing, especially after reading The Book Thief which was a powerful, well-written work. I think I'll pass on this one.

19 year old cab driver Ed Kennedy lacks purpose, ... Yes, The Book Thief takes a little effort initially whereas I am the Messenger is quite addictive from the start. I also love his 3 or 4 books about the Wolfe brothers - Getting the Girl is one of them.
Did you enjoy Ever, I read Fairest last year and really liked it. I loved it! I've been reading The Book Thief and hadn't gotten into it, so I decided to try I am the Messenger instead and am really glad I did. It is definately a book I'll keep to reread :) Welcome to the challenge.

#179: I actually preferred I Am the Messenger to The Book Thief, even though I know I am in the minority there. How do you think they compared? I just finished I Am The Messenger and LOVED it. It is definately one of those books that sticks with you and I know I'll be rereading it! As cheesy as I feel admitting it, I laughed and cried reading this book :) ... style. Once I'd hit my stride with the feel and flow I couldn't put the book down. I also really like his other book, I Am the Messenger. Great stuff.

I just finished I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak and have just started The Mayor's Tongue by Nathaniel Rich. 35. I am the Messenger by Markus Zusak. This is a really good book by the author of The Book Thief. It has been called YA although I think that the language and actions are more for "older" young adults- not young teenagers. I really love this one. It started off with me thinking it was just okay and by the end I was blown away. My favorite quote of this book is on page 156. In addition to The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger, you should consider Fighting Ruben Wolfe, also by Zusak. Like the others, it has a great deal of merit and the morals/lessons are excellent. I was also hooked over the past two years by Markus Zusak's two books, The Book Thief and I Am the Messenger. Good luck with your challenge.
I'd recommend that you try a book by Marcus Zusak (either The Book Thief or I Am the Messenger) or Feed by M.T. Anderson. All three are very good young adult fiction that I read this past year. I've read The Messenger (a.k.a. I Am the Messenger)

One thing I noticed in that book is the use of the word "flyscreen" and "windscreen". Here in the U.S. we call those things "screens" and do not note what is ... I am the Messenger is definitely on my Christmas list!! #8 & 10 -- I read I am the Messenger and liked it, and despite the sex/drinks I prob would recommend it to my 13 yr old, and the music works for his interests too... I try not to sound like to much of a Dad ("You must listen to this!") and force only classic rock or, God forbid like my ... ... crazy about it, and a friend of mine loves it so much that her LT screen name is based on it. I, on the other hand, like I Am the Messenger better, though I agree that The Book Thief is a good, well-written book. Ok, I'm back!

I started American Gods and The Messenger yesterday for group reads in other forums, and am so far enjoying both (although I barely got 20 pages into The Messenger before I had to put it down and go ... I am the Messenger won the Printz Honor this year and is one of the best books I have read in the last year. Our high school book club (which I mediate) is reading it this month.
I found it slow at times, but I was compelled to read on always! We're reading I Am The Messenger, which seems like it'll be a good book :) Haven't actually started it yet but I've heard it's really intresting. I'm reading I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak, which won the Printz a few years ago. It's great.
