I am a big fan of Alyssa Brugman and was very disappointed with this book. I found the characters shallow and the message simplistic and preachy. The message seemed to read "Be nice to geeks or else it will be your fault when they die." There are so many other books that cover suicide and feeling like an outcast and peer pressure so much better than this book. Yr 7 - Yr 8 Megan is one of the leaders of the 'in' group. They do everything together, moving in a pack and thinking in a pack. She can't imagine what it would be like not to be popular. Perdita, on the other hand, has no friends. She is so different that Megan's group call her 'the Freak.' These two girls have nothing in common. When Megan and Perdita find themselves together on detention, Megan finds herself getting to know and almost like Perdita. Perdita teaches Megan about poetry and about a whole different side of life. Megan shows Perdita what a family is like. Ultimately, though, Megan has to choose between her 'old' friends and the popularity of the group and her almost-friend Perdita. It seems a simple decision, but Megan's choice will have shocking consequences. excellent book. predictable that 'weird' girl will kill herself, but the resolution is wonderfully done After being in detention with a girl called "The Freak," Megan finds herself torn between the developing friendship the two share and her involvement with a popular clique. 0.069 seconds to build listing no reviews | add a review
Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0385731159, Hardcover)There are those who are popular. There are those who are outcasts. And there are those who must choose between the two. Megan Tuw has always been popular. As a leader of her high school’s most cliquish group, she’s among the anointed girls who think nothing of ridiculing those who don’t fit in. That includes Perdita Wiguiggan—a classmate Megan and her friends openly refer to as the Freak. But Megan doesn’t know the first thing about Perdita, since she would never dream of talking to her. Only when the two girls are thrown together in detention does Megan begin to see Perdita as more than someone with an odd last name, as more than the school outcast. And slowly, Megan finds herself drawn into an almost-friendship. Then Megan faces a choice: Perdita or the group?
