You are The Girl, and The Girl is a Badass. From the opening lines, it's clear The Girl at the center of these poems is damaged--which is another way to say she's a survivor. If the Girl Never Learns moves from the personal to the mythic to the apocalyptic, because The Girl would do anything, even go to hell, to save her soul. So, she resists, takes action to overturn society's suffocating ideal of Good Girldom. The poems' sense of breathlessness reflects The Girl's absolute need to control her own destiny, to outrun her past, while at the same time chasing a future she alone has envisioned and embodied. This collection of poetry was so.. it spoke it me on such a deep and personal level that I had to put it down so many times that sometimes I wondered if I would ever finish it. But not only did I tell myself I had to, I wanted to. The poems are so starkly beautiful and honest in their pain, and yes it can be hard to read - but I beg anyone who can, to read this important piece of work.

This book of poetry left me feeling a sense of deep sadness and for that, I will forever hold each piece of what every girl has said in every poem, close to my heart. ( )

(Note: I received an advanced copy of this poetry collection through LibraryThing Early Reviewers.)

This book cuts, bites, and kicks its way through myths, horror films, and everyday life. The collection is divided into three sections (“The Girl and the Man,” “The Girl and the Myth,” and “The Girl and the End”), all of which carry the same bold attitude and voice.

The Girl is damaged, The Girl is a fighter, The Girl fucks, The Girl feels. Silverman’s blunt language blended with memorable visuals make both The Girl and If the Girl Never Learns: Poems painfully honest and easy to connect with.
