I really liked Speak too! The only part I didnt like was that there was cussing... AHG! There is too much cussing in the world... and in books. Anyway's I really didnt expect... that to be what happened... (dont want to spoil) but I still thought it was really good.

Well I've never read a Philippa Gregory novel yet and don't think I will; after reading this review. I also loved Speak, another YA that always comes to mind though it's quite different, just that the girl also has a problem with speaking, is Tending to Grace.

Speak has been on the TBR pile for a wee while now. Reading your review makes me want to get to it quicker.

Speak and Stargirl are great. The Book Thief is an amazing read, set during WWII and narrated by Death. Two newer ones that are topnotch are The Hunger Games and Graceling, the former an engrossing dystopia thriller, and the latter a well-written fantasy.

For teaching YA lit focused on girl protagonists, I'd suggest Speak and Coraline. For teaching YA lit focused on boy protagonists, I'd suggest If Rock and Roll Were a Machine and most anything by Chris Crutcher.

Coraline and MirrorMask by Neil Gaiman. I'd say recommend Speak to her in two or three years.

Wow. Lucky you! Actually, I really did like Speak, but I was surprised that it was required reading....it doesn't really seem like a "school reading" kind of book! No, I haven't read Twisted; have you? Is it good?
