Michael Marshall Smith, writing as Rutger—this is the second novel about a low-rent YouTube vlogger of the mysterious. Chasing his ex-wife, he and his team get caught up in a young girl’s disappearance and reappearance; she insists that she died and came back to life, and it’s somehow connected to the walls in the middle of nowhere that surround the town, keeping out … something dangerous. I love Smith writing as Smith; this had more of the pure cynicism about humanity that I associate with him writing as Marshall, with some extra supernatural thrown in. ( ) The Possession is the second book in Michael Rutger's The Anomaly Files series. I quite enjoyed the first one - The Anomaly. (my review) This description had me pick up that first book...."If Indiana Jones lived in the X-Files era, he might bear at least a passing resemblance to Nolan Moore - a rogue archaeologist hosting a documentary series derisively dismissed by the "real" experts, but beloved of conspiracy theorists." And it was catching up with the characters and seeing what new 'unknowns' Nolan and company would discover that had me happily picking up this next book. Sidekick Ken is back as well as other supporting players from the first book. Hunting for a story (okay, really Nolan knows his ex-wife is on a story there herself and wants to see her) the crew find themselves in Birchlake, California. The story? Walls - stone walls seemingly randomly built. They start and stop at odd spots, the height on most of them won't keep anything in or out and many of them are in the forest. Rutger references many sites that had me firing up a browser to check them out. And yes, this is a real thing - the Nazca Lines, the Sajama Lines and Gungywamp are just a few examples of this phenomenon. But there is much more going on in Birchlake - add in a missing girl and some unusual townsfolk - and you've got yourself a multilayered story. What's not to like? A mystery, the unknown, snappy (and humorous) dialogue and lots of action. The setting is really well done - I could absolutely imagine being caught up in the fog, the odd buildings and the dark forest. There are some creepy moments when I wanted to shout - No, don't go there to our intrepid crew! I must admit, I had to do some mental gymnastics to keep up with the last few chapters. The story flips back and forth between two groups. And up and down as the 'anomaly' and the present collide. Although this is part of a series, The Possession can absolutely be read as a stand alone. I did like the first book a bit better, but this reader is looking forward to the third entry in this series. Brilliant As soon as I saw this book was being released I have been excited, I read Micheal Rutgers last book ‘ The Anomaly’ and was gripped from the first page to the last, ‘The Possession’ done the same. I was particularly excited to see the characters from the last book back, and their story continue, the part that makes the book for me though is the mysteries I’ve learnt about and the anomalies that exist in our world. This book was brilliant and I really hope there is going to be more books in this series, more mysteries both fictious, and the ones from real life, because this is exactly my type of book. I would definitely recommend ‘The Possession’ as a book worth reading, if you’re interested in mysteries and the blurring between fact and fiction, or if you want a good read. The Possession – Sleep with the light on The Possession by Michael Rutger is the second in the series of The Anomaly Files, but you do not need to read the series in sequence. The Possession could quite easily be a standalone book, as either as part of a series or on its own it will last a long time on your memory. Nolan Moore is an archaeologist and conspiracy theory nut who produces his own You tube documentary series. He has travelled to a New England village, that is ‘quaint’ and he has brought, Ken, Molly and Pierre that make the team up. They are looking for general weirdness, something different, they certainly know what their audience likes. What they get is not quite what they expected. Moore’s ex also makes an appearance who is investigating the disappearance of young girl. Both investigations merge and delivers a roller coaster ride, that may make you want to sleep with the lights on. With a mixture of tense, and gripping thriller horror, to at times where you will laugh out loud. The Possession will keep you on edge throughout but is an excellent read. no reviews | add a review
