This was a post Civil War, American West romance. Kaylee is a rancher's daughter. She acts like one of the ranch hands. One day she comes across a wounded Indian and decides to take care of him as he heals. She keeps it a secret from her step-father, who hates all Indians (and blames them for the theft of many of his cattle). Blue Hawk was double-crossed by a white man and left for dead. He falls for Kaylee as she heals him and needs her help to get to his home. Can their love survive the fact that they come from two different worlds?

This was a tear-jerker! Even though I spent a lot of time crying over this book, I really enjoyed it. The story is set in the Dakotas and there is a wonderful scene describing the Battle of Little Big Horn from the Indian's point of view. The book deals with how the Indians felt about the white man encroaching on their land (and the raw deal they got from the government), how Kaylee and Blue Hawk had to deal with hatred between their peoples, and their fears about their future.
