I first encountered Dale Peck's work in the late 1990s, and so was very much looking forward to this, his first collection of short stories from various points over the last 25 years or so.

As with much of Peck's prose, this is a challenging, provocative collection, with a focus on queer relationships, violence, frustrated intimacy. As with many short story collections, there is a hit or miss element. The first story ('Not Even Camping is Like Camping Anymore') has a comic take on a child's obsession with his babysitter's son, with an ending that will shock you, whatever your opinion. The last story ('Summer Beam') is in two parts, and feels a little out of place with what comes before. In between, there are stories about a son trying to reconcile with his mother's killer, or an American man in London cruising for sex.

Where Peck succeeds is writing the melancholy in failed or failing relationships, in the quiet human struggle with the world around us. Where he tends to the deliberately provocative is when it becomes less insightful. In a sense, then, this is a perfect representation of his work, especially for those coming to his writing for the first time. As ever, he never fails to frustrate and delight at the same time.3.5 stars. ( )
