Call of Cthulhu (1981)

The sixth edition softcover is extremely well done and a bargain. Covers character creation, gamemaster, a Lovecraft stories, entities, spells, going insane and everything else to an appropriate level. If you don't really have much interest in gaming but like Lovecraft browsing this would still be enjoyable. It would be pretty hard to make a one volume game core book any better, except perhaps with fancy coloured artwork. Which you wouldn't get at this price and doesn't happen generally anyway. The Book Depository sells rpgs too, so now you know. The artwork in this is good, too.

3d6 style attributes, percentage based skills system and also measures your Sanity as an important game mechanic. An earlier rpg and still a classic.

This is the core book for the role playing game 'Call of Cthulhu' - characters, monsters, general strategy, forbidden books, lore, mythos (with the 'Cthulhu' story included). Useful for any Game Master who wants to start a campaign - can be completed with the '1920s companion', the 'Arkham' addition, or the 'Dunwich' one. ( )

6h edition: Largely the 5.5/5.6 text, re-laid out based on the 20th Anniversary Edition. Unfortunately, the grey backgrounds result in a decrease in legibility over the prior versions, with some sections seemingly particularly muddy and visually unclear.

If you have either 5.5 or 5.6, then stick with that one rather than upgrading. The content changes are minor enough to be practically indistinguishable, while the new layout is for the worst. ( )

This is the quintessential roleplaying game of Lovecraftian horror.

Various editions of this game have typically been distinctly different from each other. I can't tell you off hand whether this is the best edition of this book that's ever been published, but it's adequate for my needs and interests.

Become an investigator, and soon realise that the most important thing in the world is trying to hang on to your sanity. Avoiding being
destroyed by creeping monsters and crazed cultists, is good, too, but a quick axe murder might be preferable in some cases to a life and existence of crazed, terrified insanity.
