... budget will be more reasonable this year. (Now I'm fighting the temptation to get Night Thoughts and the complete Pepys Diary.)

... but after watching The Happening a couple of nights ago, I started thinking they should get M. Night Shyamalan to direct Diary. MNS could add some much needed atmosphere. Palahniuk's minimalist dialogue would be an improvement of Night's portentious/ridiculous stuff. And the twist ending ...

I'm going to go put Diary by Chuck Palahniuk and The Passion by Jeanette Winterson in my inventory in a couple hours - if any LibraryThingers want them, drop me a comment and I'll reserve them for you. I thought they were both dreadful, but they're wishlisted so there ya go.

... bothered to finish Fight Club, Haunted was gross for the sake of being gross and I hope they all died miserable deaths, Diary was utterly stupid, even though there was a gem of a good idea behind it. I thought The DaVinci Code was a decent mystery novel, but simply could not understand ...

2. Diary: A Novel by Chuck Palahniuk I really cannot understand the praise heaped on this author. Parts of the story were interesting - Misty's notes to her comatose husband, the sealed off rooms ehr husband worked on - but the premise was flimsy and unbelievable, even for me, a master at ...

... Wicker Man" (the Nic Cage version) tonight. If the new version is anything like the 70s one, I now know where the plot for Diary comes from.

Diary is the second of the three books put out by Chuck Palahniuk in which he sought to reinvent the horror genre. It is also written as an homage to the work of Ira Levin, particularly Rosemary's Baby. ...

... had any thoughts on the horror fiction of Chuck Palahniuk? Between 2003 and 2006, he put out three books (Lullaby, Diary, and Haunted) that were supposed to "reinvent the horror genre." I think Palahniuk can be pretty entertaining, but I didn't find the books to be alll that radical ...

I only read four...unfortunately. Top 3... Diary by Chuck Palahniuk Lucky by Alice Sebold The Color Purple by Alice Walker And because I was quite torn with which ones to add I'll also say that Interview with the vampire by Anne Rice was great.

Diary by Chuck Palahniuk And hopefully soon American Psycho as I can borrow it from the library when I turned 18 (on the 22nd of Jan) YAY! No really, that's what I'm waiting for. Alcohol! nah! I want American Psycho.

I shall be starting Diary by Chuck Palahniuk And quite unacceptably, Chuck Palahniuk doesn't work on touchstones.

... or the way to get to that message. I don't think Choke does the best job of it when compared to his other books (Diary and Fight Club in particular), but when compared to much of the writing out there, I think it holds its own. One thing I prefered about Choke to Fight Club-it didn' ...

... is pretty questionable. I actually do like a lot of Palahniuk's other works: Fight Club as well as Lullaby and Diary. (But Haunted is a total mess.) That said, I've never been all that impressed by his overall skill as a writer. Choke actually has phrases, passages, or even ...

I liked Diary too, but I found it's horror conceits even more problematic than those of Lullaby. My main problem with Diary is that there seems to be too much that happens just because it's fated to, without any real explanation of whether it's all being caused by the island, the families, or ...

... although I have been wondering whether that's because it was the first Palahniuk I ever read - I also really like Diary, but I've found in general, the more of his books I read the less impact they have...

... Chandler and Lovecraft. I will probably have some more thoughts on minimalism and horror when I get around to comparing Diary to Ira Levin. I certainly wouldn't say the two were incompatible, and Lovecraft himself attempted to work in a somewhat less lush style late in his career.

... and both feature protagonists who inadvertently aquire some rather creepy powers. The other is comparing Palahniuk's Diary to one of Ira Levin's novels which helped inspire it, probably either The Stepford Wives or Rosemary's Baby. (Baby would be more appropriate, although ...

... I couldn't recommend it highly enough, especially to someone who's already read and enjoyed his work. I actually think that Diary and Haunted are among his weaker novels, so I can't wait to see what you think of his earlier novels! Do keep me posted as you explore the wonderful world of Chuck. ...

... of modern life without really getting beyond the superficial. (And tying into all this is that Palahniuk's previous novel Diary had apparently not been too popular with his fan base.) I imagine any author will make certain calculations between art and commerce. For every J.K. Rowling, ...

... was just being pleasantly surprised at how tightly it was written. I became interested in Levin after reading Palahniuk's Diary, which is partially something of an homage to Levin. Palahniuk's plotting/pacing is really saggy, so Stepford Wives took me by surprise. I guess I was rating ...

--> 19 I haven't read Rant yet, but my favorite Palahniuk book was Diary. Have you read that one yet? I found Haunted a little overwhelming in its grossness and simply trying to cram too much into one book. That book would actually have been better had it been written as a short story ...

Well, it's been a while but I finally got around to reading Diary and found it absolutely brilliant. ... ! And I've read everything by Chuck Palahniuk, and Invisible Monsters is my least favorite. I think I'd agree that Diary was my favorite, although I really enjoyed Lullaby and Haunted.

... I'm not sure you're going to like the rest of Palahniuk's books. His books tend to be similar in a way. My favorite was Diary. Do you have that one? It's not as offensive as others. It's kind of a mystery about a woman who finds out (or who thinks she finds out) that she's trapped on an ...
