Why not! A fun, page-turning narrative voice. I’ll probably pick up more Francis if I discover him in a free library or “book swap” shelf while traveling. ( ) I'm a sucker for Dick Francis, been reading him since I was twelve - my grandfather was a fan and he had them around the house, so I just picked them up. They're not edge of your seat thrillers and the mysteries are fairly straight-forward, but his writing is just elegant. His books are a fun way to spend some time relaxing. This really isn't a review of this specific title, more of a general take on Mr. Francis' style, you know what to expect with him. I haven't been disappointed yet. Not one of his best. Enjoyed it though. The row between the laird and the National Trust-type authority was interesting. I'm sure there must in reality be a lot of disputes like this about who owns certain artifacts, and whether they should be retained by the individual or the state. But the hiding of it on the roof of the cottage seemed a little daft to me. A story about a young man, Alexander, born to Scottish aristocracy but content to living in the highlands pursuing his talent for painting. His father who owns a brewery and a race horse has a heart attack and there are funny things going on at the brewery forcing it into potentially declaring bankruptcy if things are not put right. The thoroughbred is an asset that must be hidden along with pricey family heirlooms from those that want to bring the brewery down and there is an embezzlement of brewery funds which compound the problems. The plot was well developed with several twists and turns. The characters are well developed and likeable except for the bad guys of course. no reviews | add a review
