A mildly cute rhyming alphabet book, enhanced by simplistic illustrations and bright, vibrant, almost neon colors.

It's cute, but I'm too lame to figure out why it's a classic of the alphabet book genre. ( )

This book is a true classic from my generation. It was absolutely my favorite book from elementary and I will always remember it this way thanks to a fabulous art project that my schools librarian did with each of the sixth graders before they left the school. We each chose our favorite book from the entire time we were in elementary school and created an illustrated pillow with a small amount of embroidery to highlight our drawing that had been transferred onto fabric. My mother still has the pillow I made, and loves to give me some of Bill Martin Jr.'s other great books as gifts because she will always remember how close this book was to my heart.

This is a wonderful little picture book that`s a hit with young children. It`s a fun book that kids seem to really enjoy and is a great way to teach them about the alphabet. The illustrations are large, bright, colourful and attractive. Kids will also find it easy to follow along as the book has a catchy rhythm describing the letters as they race up and down a coconut tree. This particular version includes the letters of the alphabet. There is however, another version of this book that uses numbers. In addition, some versions also come with a CD. While not an award-winner, it is extremely popular and highly recommended by parents of pre-schoolers and early learners. ( )

Once the letters all get to the top, while they try to 'beat' each other to the top of the coconut try, they don't quite fit. It's a good way for kids to remember letters and put sounds together with sighting letters. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 068983568X, Paperback)

The 26 characters in this rhythmic, rhyming baby book are a lowercase alphabet with attitude. "A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts." (Baby to preschool) --Richard Farr
