W.H. Auden, dat is een naam als een klok. Ik verwachtte dan ook erg veel van deze bloemlezing. Maar het is me tegengevallen. Auden is een heel veelzijdig dichter, dat is me wel duidelijk geworden: hij had natuurlijk een lange carrière en ondergang een heel interessante persoonlijke evolutie; dat uit zich in een grote diversiteit aan thema's, en uiteenlopende dichtmethodes (gaande van korte punt-verzen tot lange, vertellende gedichten). Maar toch sprak het me niet erg aan; zeker zijn langere gedichten kwamen erg langdradig over. Natuurlijk zitten er een paar prachtige parels tussen (het klassieke "funeral blues" bijvoorbeeld, en ook het slotgedicht "archeology"). Wat me in deze bloemlezing erg stoorde is dat er helemaal geen context of duiding wordt meegegeven; het is me ook niet duidelijk of een chronologische orde is gevolgd. Van een prestigieuze uitgever mag je meer verwachten. ( )
