This is great descriptive story that uses images to portray so much emotions The colors are calming while the child is running wild and they provide a perfect contrast that suits the story perfectly. Little Night/Nochecita is children’s fiction, picture book written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales. It was published by Square Fish, an imprint of Macmillan Books, in 2016. It would be suitable for ages 2-7 years old. Nochecita is a story about Mother Sky getting her daughter, Little Night, for the nighttime. Little Night is silly and playful while her mother is nurturing and helps her. She hides and makes her mother find her before each thing they do like taking a bath, combing her hair, or getting dressed.I liked this book because of it’s magical, whimsical illustrations that looked soft and blurred. The colors she used -blues, reds, and purples, along with the style made this book feel like a dream and matched the mood of the story. Another reason why I liked this book so much is because of the characters. It is so rare to see people of color in books and I appreciated her using darker skin tones and the texture of hair because representation matters and young children want to see characters that look like them in the books they read. Lastly, I loved that my specific book was the bilingual edition and had both the English and Spanish version of the text on each page. One thing I did not like, however, was how dark the book was because although it did give a “dreamy” feel it was hard to see everything in the illustrations and would have been easier to read with a lighter text for more contrast against the dark hues. This book is simple and does not really have an overarching message, but it can be used to highlight the loving relationships we have. no reviews | add a review
